1. What got you into radio?
It started with the love of music. Radio was the gateway to it, and the magical things the DJs I grew up listening to did each day. I was always into it. Then after the first time I was on air, I was hooked.
2. Did you do college radio at Fresno State? How did that experience best prepare you for your first gig in commercial radio?
Yes, I was one of the fortunate who had an opportunity to do college radio. It prepared me by doing it for the love. I always keep those experiences with me. It was for the love of the music, the fun, and connecting with our listeners and fans.
3. There's very little that you haven't done at KCAQ and now the large number of stations you oversee with Point/Gold Coast. Taking a look back, are there any job experiences you regret not having?
Engineering. It continues to fascinate me. I have some great guys we work with who allow me to ask them tons of questions, and continue to teach me new things.
4. Away from the stations, what do you listen to when you are ready to unwind?
(This is going to be very random)
- Unsigned (or if you want to call it "Underground") Hip Hop
- Slow Jams
- Ellie Goulding
- Yacht Rock/Blue Eyed Soul
- Bossa Nova covers
- Current Hip Hop covers on piano
5. If you weren't in radio, Brian, what do you think you'd be doing professionally?
Some type of community service or youth counselor work. I worked in juvenile probation while in college, and enjoyed it.
6. What do you want to do better, professionally in 2018?
Just to keep learning and sharing. With the people I work with, peers, our audiences, whomever. Everyone here contributes, and it is all truly a collaborative effort. I just want to make sure we continue to expand on that and to allow us to continue to execute better.
7. You've worked with your morning show at KCAQ for many years. What buddy movie characters would you say that Rico And Mambo most closely resemble. (in terms of roles, personalities, etc) Where might co-host Kat Murillo fit in?
Rico and Mambo are definitely Will Ferrel and John C. Reilly from Step Brothers. Weirdos, but when they come together something magical happens.
Kat on the show with those guys, is like Penny from Inspector Gadget. She's really smart, and has a great perspective. Her skills help keep Rico & Mambo out of trouble, and always look like heroes.
8. Any insights on who you see as the next breakout stars in Hip Hop for 2018?
No one in particular as a breakout star. However, we're getting access to so much music and so many good artists, in all genres. I love it.
9. Now that you've gotten some years of upper management under your belt, ever see it leading to a GM or Market Manager position?
Possibly. I enjoy all aspects of the business. As long as I get to continue to learn, grow, and work with good people, I'm open tor anything.
10. Rapid fire time...quick sentence or even one word answers:
- Family = Love
- Staff = Lead
- Growth= Always
