BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
I’ve worked every shift at KS1075 over the past 24 years. I started in promotions and worked my way up to late nights, while still working promotions. In 2000 I was promoted to middays and this would be my longest stint lasting 15 years. In 2016, I got the afternoon nod which lasted a year. In 2017, I finally reached the throne of radio, the KS1075 Morning Show! I have been blessed to be in this position for the last 3 years. What a ride! KDKO 1510 1993-1995;
KS104 1995-1996;
KYGO: Nov 2012-2015;
KQKS: 1996-Present
1. What got you into radio?
I'm humbled to say my listeners and colleagues call me "The Mayor". I was raised in Southwest Denver and my first radio gig was at a local R&B station in 1993, as an intern. I would call the night DJ and do voice impressions and bits. Two weeks into my internship, the station owner happened to be listening. He liked what I did so he hired me to as the night show co-host the next day.
2. What did you dream of becoming when you were a kid?
I fell in love with radio the first time I was old enough to listen, but I always dreamed of being an NFL player or an actor. I definitely wanted to entertain people in some sort of way. I’ve come a long way from singing and rapping in the shower!
3. What would probably surprise most people about your market?
I’ve been told from outsiders that they thought we were an every day small cow-town, when in we in reality, Denver is a city made up of so many different people who represent various ethnicities. Many D-Town peeps are culturally expressive and in tune with their heritage, while at the same time, supportive of each other, across color lines. Denverites have been through a few tragedies and we have shown to be resilient through perseverance and mental toughness, but we are also a community that supports and leans on each other. I’m proud to be a part of the Mile High City!
4. Morning radio's biggest requirement?
Be yourself and be honest. Your listeners want to connect with you, they are waiting for you to reach out to them. Touch them mentally and they will never forget you.
5. If you weren't in radio, what do you think you'd be doing professionally?
I would be rockin’ the mic at a drive thru near you! JK, when I was going to school while interning at KDKO, I was majoring in criminal justice, and thinking of law school. I was also good at selling myself, maybe I would do sales for radio! lol
6. What do you like to do in your spare time (if we weren't locked down)?
I’m a HUGE hometown sports fan, so I would be hosting our Denver Nuggets pre-game playoff parties at the Pepsi Center before going to watch the games. I also love golf even though I’m a hacker.
7. If you were a Denver Bronco, what position would you play?
QB, I would love to lead my team down the field for the TD!
8. Favorite Covid-19 lockdown snack?
Fruity Pebbles cereal is my go-to anytime of day or night
9. You are a radio vet that has worked every daypart in the biz. Got any advice for someone just starting out?
You get out of it, what you put into it! There will be many days of hard work, long hours and zero “thank yous”! The pay? Well, let’s just say if you have a passion for the business, you will get there. In the end, it’s all worth it.
10. You need a celebrity to fill in for you for one week while you are on vacation. Who would you choose?
That’s a tough one, I love comedians Kevin Hart, Anjelah Johnson and Gabriel Iglesias, but the slight edge goes to Fluffy.
Bonus Questions
If you had to eat one type of meal every day for a month, what would it be?
I love all types of food, but being of Mexican descent, can you say Enchiladas?!?!?
If you could be on any TV reality show or game show, which would you want to be on?
Ellen’s Game of Games. I definitely think I could win!
