BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS
Specs Howard School of Broadcast Arts where they got me started interning in Detroit at WDFX, then gigs at KMVR/Las Cruces, KPRR/El Paso, WFLZ/Tampa, KPTY/Phoenix, KQBT/Austin, KSFM/Sacramento and now KKSS/KKRG in Albuquerque.
1. What got you into radio?
Heard an ad on the radio for Specs Howard Broadcasting School and it seemed like it would be fun.
2. What did you dream of becoming when you were a kid?
A starship Captain
3. How was the transition from Sacramento to Albuquerque? What was the biggest change, lifestyle-wise?
I would say just deep diving into the Northern NM culture and vibe. There are a lot of unique qualities this area has and some really great people. It has been a bit of a challenge being so far away from the ocean!
4. Learn anything about yourself through the pandemic?
Yes, I don't isolate well. I really missed going places and doing things more than I thought I would.
5. Were you cooking more or doing more food delivery?
Cooking at home more. I thought I was going to save a bunch of money eating at home. Turns out that it cost me almost the same.
6. What would probably surprise most people about Albuquerque?
I feel it’s got this reputation as a violent city and while we have our troubles...all cities I have lived in have crime problems of some kind. It has great people and a lot to see and do.
7. If you weren't in radio, what do you think you'd be doing professionally?
No idea, probably CIA or NSA or something with cool weapons and gadgets.
8. The Voice, American Idol or America's Got Talent?
UGH! It used to be American Idol, then I got hooked on AGT. Now I just kind of drift around on Tik Tok for hours on end.
9. What programming skills would you like to sharpen?
When the pandemic hit, having everything just grind to a halt no events or promotion it was crazy. It was a real test to figure out new ways to connect to our audience and one I often reflect on now. Now, I ask myself what community and/or local passion projects can we involve ourselves in? This is an area I knew was important but often got overlooked while trying to fit in all the other promotional events and projects that we normally do.
10. Who are some of your radio mentors?
There are so many people I have learned from. To name a few; Dom Theodore; I not only have learned so much from him but I owe him a great deal for all he has done for me. Byron Kennedy...truly one of the greatest radio programmers, Jerry Clifton; a true radio visionary. I'm still getting great ideas and radio collaboration from Bob Lewis. I am so grateful for these people and others that I have learned from over the years. That, by the way, is one of the things I can say came out of the Covid shutdown...Gratitude!
Bonus Questions
If you could be on any TV reality show or game show, which would you want to be on?
Price Is Right... even without Bob Barker, I still love that game show.
If you had to eat one type of meal every day for a month, what would it be?
Well, before moving here it would be Mexican but now I'd say Italian.
