Have an opinion? Add your comment below. Who plays Matthew "Doughboy" Florence in a Netflix series?
There aren’t many funny ginger actors these days, and while he’s considerably shorter than me, I would have to go with one of my all-time favorite actors, Seth Green-
BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
I got my first internship in 1993 at KKXX/Bakersfield. I called their night guy, Mark Adams, every night for about six months and begged for an internship until I finally wore him down. Since then, I've been fortunate enough to work with some great people in some great markets like Kiss 99.7 in San Luis Obsipo, 95.7 The Wolf in San Francisco, Wild 106, Kiss 97.3, and 93.3 KOBFM in Albuquerque, and 103.3 The Vibe Oxnard-Ventura, and now back home on the central coast of Cali at KWWV Wild 106.
1.What got you into radio?
I can never remember a time where I haven’t been obsessed with radio. Growing up in Bakersfield in the early 90s, I was fortunate enough to have 105.3 KKXX programmed by the great Steve Wall. That station had so many amazing jocks, and I just remember the excitement that station always brought to an otherwise boring city, and I just had to be a part of that.
2. What did you dream of becoming when you were a kid?
When I was younger, I was obsessed with wanting to be a fighter pilot, but I let go of that dream after watching “Goose” lose his life in a dangerous dog fight training mishap. I’m not sure I ever recovered from that, but the triumph of his son “Rooster” has provided me with closure all these years later.
3. Has the COVID-19 pandemic taught you anything about yourself?
I’ve lost some very good friends to this pandemic, RIP to Big Mona and my big brother, Alex G. If I’ve learned anything, it’s given me reason to live life to the fullest and tell those I love and care about how I feel while I still can. I’ve also learned that I can stay calm and push things forward while under intense anxiety riddled pressures.
4. You've spent time in radio sales. What's the most important thing you brought from that experience to the PD chair?
I got to spend some time in sales with my company, Dimes Media and it’s provided me an insight as to how to better communicate with my sales and promotions team. I’ve pretty much held every position you can in radio and I feel like that’s made me a better program director and teammate to everyone within our cluster.
5. What would probably surprise most people about San Luis Obispo?
I’ve always told people that this is the market that time forgot. lol. People out here are still very connected to their local radio stations and personalities. They still get excited for radio station events and have deep connections to their favorite stations and personalities because most of them have been here their entire lives and grew up with Wild 106.
6. If you weren't in radio, what do you think you'd be doing professionally?
I would most likely be designing high-end home theater and audio systems. I’ve always enjoyed that stuff and have dabbled in that while between jobs before.
7. Got any hobbies? Pick up any new hobbies during the pandemic?
My #1 hobby is golf, it’s a game that’s brought me a ton of joy even though I'm ridiculously average at the game. I’m also still collecting and reading comic books as I’ve been doing since I was about 9 years old, and during the pandemic I also got really into collecting vintage action figures, my He-Man Masters of the Universe collection is pretty damn cool…that is cool right?
8. If you could be on any TV reality show or game show, which would you want to be on?
I have always wanted to be on the show, Big Brother, but that show has changed a lot over the years and is definitely more of a show for the 20 something crowd to participate in. My new obsession is the new reality show on Netflix called The Circle, and I am manifesting it now by saying I WILL be on that show at some point.
9. Who plays Matthew "Doughboy" Florence in a Netflix series?
There aren’t many funny ginger actors these days, and while he’s considerably shorter than me, I would have to go with one of my all-time favorite actors, Seth Green
10. Who were/are some of your radio mentors?
I’ve had incredible luck with the people I have been able to work with, but just to name a handful, Tom “Jammer” Naylor: This guy gave me my first fulltime on air gig and he is always there for me to pick his brain whenever I need it. Jason “Hammer” Squires: Jason and I have been friends since the 5th grade, and here we are still doing what we always said we’d be doing. He’s a great PD and a damn good jock as well, his friendship and advice is everything to me. Steve Wall: Steve hired me to be Mark Adams intern in 1993 at 105.3 KKXX and he’s been a great source of advice and good radio stories all these years later. Last but certainly not least, my current boss and station owner, Eric Fahnoe: Eric brought me in because he believed I had what it takes to be a valuable part of the radio group outside of programming, and he’s honestly made me a more well rounded program director and on air personality by teaching me aspects of the other side of radio that I had always ignored before.
Bonus Questions
If you had to eat one type of meal every day for a month, what would it be?
This is an easy question, Mexican cuisine is the best, by far. I can eat burritos every day if my amazing woman would let me, thankfully, she's smarter than me and tries to keep me healthy as best she can.
You are alone and stuck on a deserted island. You have a shit-ton of batteries and a portable entertainment center featuring a DVD/CD player. You only have 3 movies and 3 albums for the next 3 months. What 3 movies and cds would you want on hand?
Movies:
1. Shawshank Redemption (Perfect all the way through and an absolute perfect ending)
2. Hot Tub Time Machine (Hilarious and so much 80’s nostalgia)
3. St. Elmo’s Fire (The best of the Brat Pack, and honestly just an amazing movie….although looking back, Kirby was a super creeper)CDs:
1. The Eagles – Hotel California (Greatest album ever made)
2. Boyz II Men – II (My all time favorite R&B album, and also reminds me of R-Dub and I arguing over the where this album ranks an R&B history….R-Dub is wrong by the way)
3. Outkast – ATLiens (I could never live without this album. I still feel this album doesn’t get the love it deserves when talking about some of the greatest hip hop albums of all time, and the insert was a comic book so that helps me get my comic fix on the island!) -
