Have an opinion? Add your comment below. If you weren't in radio, what do you think you'd be doing professionally?
I would be working in baseball, either in the marketing or promotion side of things-
BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
I started in radio as a promotion intern back in 2010. I worked part-time doing on-air work with different personalities and eventually took over my own night show in 2019. When the pandemic hit, I thought my radio career was over. Then I got a call from Tino asking to audition for TCR and now here we are!
1. What got you into radio?
I didn’t even realize I had an interest in radio. I had a friend who would constantly ask me to intern because he thought I would be a good fit, so I FINALLY gave it a shot. Once I was in, I realized how much I loved it and continued to learn everything I could and pursue a career in the radio industry.
2. What did you dream of becoming when you were a kid?
Since I was 11, I always wanted to be a sports broadcaster and be the next Erin Andrews.
3. What would you like to do better as a personality as we get into Fall?
I want to challenge myself more. I will be coming up on year two with TCR and things are going great! I think it’s time to get uncomfortable. I'm considering my own podcast, which is something I’ve been wanting to do for a while. It would be another outlet for listeners to connect with me other than the show.
4. As Tino Cochino Radio moves into new markets, what do you look for in your research of the market?
I read a lot of news articles and I even get notifications on my phone, but for the most part, I just always try and be myself. Authenticity is always going to be relatable and connect with the audience no matter the market.
5. You’re sharing the mic with three men on the show. Do you feel a responsibility to represent a woman’s and mother’s perspective on the show? Who’s first to have your back?
Absolutely! Especially because society still has a double standard when it comes to women. So, by sharing my opinions and perspective, I always try to make sure I’m not allowing that to slide.
As far as who has my back first, well it depends who we are picking on that day! Lol But I would have to say Tino probably is the first to have my back.
6. If you weren't in radio, what do you think you'd be doing professionally?
I would be working in baseball, either in the marketing or promotion side of things.
7. Got any hobbies? Pick up any new hobbies during the pandemic?
During the pandemic I started to go hiking, I’ve been slacking, but it is something I enjoy and want to start back up again.
8. If you could be on any TV reality show or game show, which would you want to be on?
So, 21-year-old me wanted to audition for the Bad Girls Club! (I never did!) but I think I would want to try American Ninja Warrior, after I got back into shape of course!
9. Who plays Serina Perez in a Netflix biographical series about you and the show?
I would have to say Becky G, I’m a huge fan of her and with her being Chicana, she would be able to represent that side of me as well.
10. Who were/are some of your radio mentors?
Early on I was mentored by someone named Chilly, who approached me and said “I see something in you.” After that, he had me go in every weekend as a co-host and taught me how to board-op, cut up breaks, etc. That prepared me to then become a co-host with Joey Boy, who I worked with for a year and really learned about show prep and deadlines. He was the one who really pushed for me to get my own on-air shifts. He gave me the tough love, I had to work hard.
Those two helped prepare me for this new mentorship with Tino, which I am most excited about. This is my first time being on a show with a national platform. It is awesome to see all the things that go on in the background to make it work.
Bonus Questions
If you had to eat one type of meal every day for a month, what would it be?
CHICKEN WINGS, extra crispy and extra sloppy!
Think about you as an air personality five years ago. What do you think has been the biggest influence in how you do your work now?
I had a lot of doors closed, before they opened. I’ve had more disappointments than not, but looking back on where I was and where I am now, the one thing that I always carry with me is someone is always watching how you work. Had I given up or slacked because things weren’t going my way, I wouldn’t be here. So I try to keep that in my mind. I don’t give up and I don’t allow the disappointments to EVER effect my work because you don’t know who's watching.
