How similar are San Diego and Hawaii as a place to live and work?
I've been fortunate to work with passionate people in both places. At the end of the day, both places are great spots to land. But I will say…one has better tacos, and one has free babysitting. -
1. What got you into radio?
This ugly face and a somewhat decent personality. But passion is what kept me there.
2. What did you dream of becoming when you were a kid?
Dreams? I laid carpet for my dad's flooring company. Starting at the age of 6. We didn't have dreams. We had cuts and callouses. But my brother and I were allowed to control the radio when Pops went to grab lunch. Maybe subconsciously…that's where the love for radio began.
3. How do you stay relatable now that you're a husband, a dad and what-not?
It's made me a complete jock. From knowing every lyric from the Encanto soundtrack, the subtle differences between Coco and Bitter melon and my undying curiosity on why every recipe on the internet has to tell you their life's story before telling you the damn recipe. Mix that in with questions like "why we share Netflix passwords but not OnlyFans." Or will my father call me every Thursday to walk him through setting up TNF on the Firestick. All that and a good "my kid peed on me" story. Ratings Gold…. Or I hope. ;) if not, I will just pimp my kid's good looks (thanks to his mama's genes) like how the instapets do on IG.
4. How similar are San Diego and Hawaii as a place to live and work?
I've been fortunate to work with passionate people in both places. At the end of the day, both places are great spots to land. But I will say…one has better tacos and one has free babysitting.
5. What would probably surprise most people about living and working in San Diego?
$7 gas
6. If you weren't in radio, what do you think you'd be doing professionally?
With the amount of work I've had to do on my house. I've started following all of these people who fix up and flip furniture. I'd probably do that for like a month. But I would be open to babysitting. I interviewed a candidate for my child. She wanted $40 an hour, matching 401k paid vacation, summers off and still wanted to be on retainer. 😑😕😂
7. You have a toddler now. How has that changed you?
Have you matured like a old savings bond? I tried to change. I was getting soft. I would stop by my kids daycare before work. I would just watch from afar and film to send to the wife and my mom. My mom told me to "Get a life." So that kind of put me in check. By the way you can hear my mom and I at 4pm on Jamn 95-7. We do a countdown and it's my best feature.
8. If you could be on any TV reality show or game show, which would you want to be on?
Probably Shazam. A friend of mine knows rock and metal really well and hopefully we could run the table. But I think that's every DJ and retired DJ's thoughts, right?
9. Are you still doing killer production/imaging?
Yes! Also picked up KBFM/McAllen for VO. Shout out to the Wild 102. If you need a clean new sound, reach out! pablosato@ampintro.com.
10. Who were/are some of your radio mentors?
Man… Hands on in a daily fashion…Fred Rico, Rik McNeil, Rob Scorpio Jason Kidd, R-Dub and Angelique Alston. But it's the guys in passing you kind of just shut up just listen. Michael Martin, Steve Smith, Tim Richards, Pio Ferro and Rick Thomas.
