BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
KCBQ/San Diego (Country)
KEYN/Wichita (Top 40/Mainstream)
KKRD/Wichita (Top 40/Mainstream)
KDGS/Wichita (Top 40/Rhythmic)1. What got you into radio?
I knew from the age of 12 that I wanted to be radio. I have never desired to do anything else. I have been blessed. It's the only work I have done in my life.
2. What's the best part of living and working in Wichita?
Wichita is great community. The average commute her is 16 minutes, making it the shortest commute in the nation! The city is clean, the quality of life is outstanding, and the cost of living is about 10% cheaper here than anywhere else in the country. It's primarily a college sports town with the Wichita State Shockers and is the air capitol to the world. More airplanes are built here than any other city in the nation. We are the Detroit of airplane manufacturing!
3. From a purely lifestyle point of view...what market/area would you like to live in?
That's a tough question. Austin is incredible, San Diego is always nice, Atlanta, Miami, Charlotte, and Dallas are pretty good, too.
4. KDGS has grown dramatically with Entercom. Name one of the keys to that success?
I believe that the key is having passion for what you do. Approaching every day with a commitment to excellence and knowing that it is the little things that make a difference between being good and great. You have to have a good team that buys into the mission. Everyone must be on board in dedicating themselves to simply giving their best every single day. Being active in the community, utilizing and maximizing our digital platforms, being creative with contesting, and most importantly playing the best music.
5. What motivates you daily?
It doesn't take much to motivate me! I love what I do, and I love to win. It's that simple. I know that if I give it my all every day, then the rest will take care of itself.
6. Can you point to one highlight in your radio career?
There have been many, however, I would have to say it was when we forced our mainstream heritage Top 40 competitor in the market to change formats. They cut and ran, that is a great feeling. When you have forced your competitor to wave the white flag and capitulate. That is one of the many highlights in my career.
7. Hypothetical...you get to be on a TV reality show...which reality show would you like to be on?
The Amazing Race or Biggest Loser. One is a battle against another team. The other is battle with yourself.
8. What has been the most significant change in the day-to-day programming of your station since you started as a PD?
The daily tasks have expanded greatly. The focus on digital and the digital platform is probably the most significant change. This along with the HD initiative, and maximizing Web content and growing your station database probably gets a placed at the head of the line. Of course, doing more with less is something we are all having to do.
9. What do you go to get away from it all?
I love a good road trip, reading, museums, and of course a great round of golf will cure just about anything!
10. If you were to leave Radio and music today and you could choose any other occupation, what would it be?
Perhaps politics or government. Anywhere or any place that I can help people. I would like that.
Bonus Questions
