NAME:Tony TecatePOSITION:APD/MD/AfternoonsSTATION:KSFMMARKET:SACRAMENTO, CACOMPANY:CBS RADIOBORN:NOVEMBER 21RAISED:EAST LOS ANGELES
BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
At fifteen, I interned at KKBT, then went to KPWR (POWER 106) to work as Imaging Director of the BAKA BOYZ morning show and also part of the FLAVA UNIT street team. Then I went to KIIS to work in the promotions department and at the same time I was doing weekends at KISV/BAKERSFIELD. KISV turned into my first on-air gig doing nights. KBOS/FRESNO came calling for me to do nights and then I became music director there. Now I reside in SACRAMENTO as APD/MD/afternoons at KSFM.
1. What got you into radio?
Listening to Power 106 and 92.3 The Beat back in the day in Los Angeles. I was actually one of those punk kids who would try to win contest and get shout outs over the air. The scary thing is I use to record myself when I would get on and I actually still have those tapes.
2. To date, what is the highlight of your radio career?
Everyday has a highlight! I guess being able to do what you love and get paid for it, as well as being able to provide for my family is the true ultimate highlight.
3. KSFM has a long history of success in SACRAMENTO how do you and PD BYRON KENNEDY keep your team focused?
What happened? Sorry I was on my IM can you repeat the question?
4. You have a veteran team at KSFM. Can you tell me about your line-up and the rest of your staff.
In the morning we have D-Lo, Trejo, and Willie Barcena. D-Lo was an intern about five years ago and kept proving himself to Byron and me and when we asked him to step up he did. Trejo was here back when I was still in diapers I think, we brought him back and instantly everyone remembered him. Willie Barcena is a legendary comic who has the record for doing the Jay Leno show as well as a past host of Latino Laugh Festival on Si TV. Big Al does middays and has been here since 1997. He too was an intern who worked threw the ranks and ended up being our midday talent. I have been here for four and half years. I started as Nights and APD/MD. Two years ago Byron stepped me up to rock afternoons. Budman & Booger are going on there second year of doing nights. Last, but not least, the man who came all the way from Kentucky with a dream to work at KSFM, Adam Starns! He handles are overnights and production assistant duties. There you have it, the KSFM family.
5. What comes to mind when I say Vida Guerra?
A get out of jail free card from my fiancé if I can convince Vida that she needs to ride the Colossus! Onda-le mommie E-I!
6. You're a Southern California native. Do you miss it?
Of course I do! I started my career out there. I interned at The Beat, and then I was hired at Power 106. Not to mention that my whole entire family is out there. I have no family or relatives in Sac-Town, so Southwest is making a killing on me.
7. What's next for Tony Tecate?
To be honest I have my mind open to a few options. I would love to program and I wouldn't mind taking a step down in market size to take a step up in rank. I'm also thinking that I could go to a bigger market and hold the same duties that I have here at KSFM. I'm really thinking about moving to Hawaii and knocking on some doors when I land, or maybe taking another stab at the record side of the business. As long as the opportunity is right and it will help obtain my future goals, the options are limitless.
8. Who do you consider your mentor(s)?
They know who they are! How about this, Who out there is willing to share there knowledge and experience to help this future programmer in radio? I'm part of the future in radio and I cannot go anywhere until I learn the past.
9. A freak gravitational shift has added three hours to everyday. What would you do with those extra three hours?
First, I would find my competition's antenna and blow it up! Then, while it was burning to the ground I would roast marshmallows with my staff as we enjoyed a few good laughs on what a horrible station they were! Then again maybe I would just go to the gym.
10. In a couple sentences...what, if anything, is Radio missing right now?
Passion, Creativeness, Hunger, Mom and Pop Companies, Budgets and most of all the FUN! Oh yeah and payola how could I forget? Ok, sorry bad joke.
Bonus Questions
Where do you go to get away from it all?
I don't think that is possible since I love music, and I always catch myself cruising the dial when I'm on vacation. I do find myself though in Hawaii, that place brings me clarity.
