NAME:Krayzie KatPOSITION:7p-MidnightSTATION:KVEG HOT 97.5MARKET:Las Vegas, NVCOMPANY:Kemp BroadcastingBORN:805, CARAISED:Newbury Park, CA
BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
I've got brief for you...I started as an intern (when that meant bust your ass off for free to learn and experience radio) in '99 at KCAQ. In a short period of time, I was a morning show co-host, did overnights, middays, nights, and promotions, everything I guess. I took a year and a half break and realized that there's no place like home. So I went back to do Middays for my last 2 1/2 years of the 7 years I was there. Now I'm here in Sin City! Taking over the world one city at a time.
1. What was your last non-Industry job?
What do you know about the Camarillo Outlets...Nike Factory Outlet. Just like any other person you got to make things happen. Well, cash was low so I worked PT during the '04 holiday season. IF I had to do it again by all means, I'm there BUT there's a plan...and the 30 day return policy is not in it.
2. What got you interested in Radio?
To be honest I never really thought about being in radio, let alone it being my career. It just happened. Where I used to live, I'd only get KCAQ and I heard them say they were looking for an intern, so there I go to fill out the app, do an interview and now here I am.
3. What has surprised you about living and working in LAS VEGAS?
Everything. Obviously the market jump tripped me out. I'm not use to how fast the music moves. "Old School" to me is not old school here. I get a little more leeway as to what's said during my show. I have a house mortgage payment as my rent. It's not that hot, mind over matter people. LAS VEGAS in general is surprising.
4. What's the highlight of your radio career to date?
It was definitely my birthday interview with JOHN LEGEND being that I am his "Number One". I knew I was going to do the phone-in but when that "hotline" started flashing at me I lost my mind.
5. Do you have interest in becoming a PD or MD?
Of course I have. The program director is your ring leader during the Ringling Bros Circus. The go-to guy if something goes wrong, good or bad, if one of your clowns decided to go across the street to the annual Red Nose Festival you'd have to be prepared and know what to do with the rest of your team players, etc. So for now, PD/APD is a "no thanks". MD might be a good look!
6. What's the first thing you do when you get to the station?
I put away my homemade dinner, say "hi" to the boss, get my log and prize sheets from the studio and BS with J Noise for a minute, then MySpace, of course!
7. Who do you consider to be your mentor(s)?
Big Bear at KCAQ and Joey Boy, now at KKFR. I have to talk to one of them at least once a week. There are others I go to for opinions but, by far, those two are the reason why I'm here. BIG BEAR to tell me "keep it movin" and JOEY to tell me "do your thing mamma". They keep me focused and motivated. And, of course, they talk crap.
8. What do you like to do in your spare time?
I love to exercise. Running usually. Or some random ass shakin' at home, as long as my heart rates up. A good book is always fun.
9. If you were to leave Radio today and you could choose any other occupation, what would it be?
I'd probably go back to the union. "Paper or Plastic"?
10. It's Saturday night at 11:55. Where in VEGAS is KRAYZIE KAT?
I just finished my second drink at Club 702, the only spot where you get hip hop all night long, no mash-ups, no dress code, and you can roll it up...light it up...smoke it up...For the record I don't smoke...just like the way it smells.
Bonus Questions
A freak gravitational shift has added three hours to everyday. What would you do with those extra three hours?
1 hour to talk/network. 1 hour to shop and 1 hour at the day spa...hmmm sounds good.
