NAME:Pablo SatoPOSITION:Asst. Program Director KIKI (Hot 93-9) and KDNN (Island 98.5). Afternoon Drive/Imaging Director, Copywriter (Honolulu Cluster) KIKI (Hot 93-9)STATION:Hot 93-9MARKET:HonoluluCOMPANY:Clear ChannelBORN:HonoluluRAISED:Honolulu
Please outline your radio career so far: (station/date, station/date, etc.)
It all started here in HONOLULU at KIKI then moved to VEGAS to work at KFMS for RIK MCNEIL doing MD, Afternoons and Imaging. Then about a year later the station flipped and I headed to SAN DIEGO to XHTZ (JAMMIN Z90) MD and mornings Our numbers were great but I went back to HONOLULU and now back on the island at KIKI.
1) What was your last non-Industry job?
I've worked my entire life. My father owns a carpet installation company. Straight from the womb, every weekend and summer I'd be bustin' my ass laying tile, carpet and wood. The pay was great! A place to live, I got to live with the boss and free lunch.
2) What got you interested in Radio?
Not having to lay carpet sounded pretty good
3) You worked on the mainland for several years then came back to HONOLULU and KIKI. What was the biggest difference in working on the mainland and in HONOLULU?
I see no difference, to be honest. HAWAII is a major market in many ways. Being the melting pot of the Pacific we are exposed to just about everything in the world nationally and internationally. What works here, would work every where.
4) What's the highlight of your radio career to date?
Beating STERN in SAN DIEGO. It took a minute but we got the 4 points to beat him 18-34 and be ranked number 1..
5) You've done about every shift on the radio. Do you have a preference?
Mornings are great if you have a PD that believes and supports the show. I like the afternoons, people are more relaxed. They're either winding down for the day, going home or to grab some drinks plus I don't think you can compare the vibe of a Friday afternoon with a 3-day weekend coming up.
6) What do you bring to the table to help your boss, KIKI PD FRED RICO?
Creating and implementing elements for the station. Be it promotions, developing on air talents, Being a program director today is meetings after meetings and more meetings. I got to believe that Fred trusts me and so far everything I've been doing is top notch. If not I guess I would have heard it by now.
7) Who do you consider to be your mentor(s)?
FRED RICO, to this day he keeps coming up with new innovative ways to reinvent the wheel of radio. RIK MCNEIL in LAS VEGAS. He's got a great programming mind. Rick Thomas spending a few days with this guy can help a lot of people
8) What would you rather do: Be a scratch golfer or sleep with golfer NATALIE GULBIS once?
NATALIE made $786,367 in 2004 plus being 5'9", blond hair, c cup, blue-green eyes...and her own 2004 calendar. C'mon man, scratch golfer...of course. I already have a girlfriend. What make you think I'm man enough to deal with two women telling me what's wrong with me?
9) What area of your "game" do you want to improve?
I try to improve everyday. After the show driving home with that aircheck, You pick up on this and that. Don't get me wrong I love my breaks like that was perfect.....but what if you went this way or... constant perfection is the key to never becoming complacent.
10) If you were to leave Radio today and you could choose any other occupation, what would it be?
See question #1 only because I know the boss really well.
Bonus Questions
What's your dream market?
I'd love to get back to SAN DIEGO to finish what I started. Although the West Coast has always been home. I'd like to be in Chicago, New York , Boston and some other East Coast markets.
