- 2000 nights KISV/Bakersfield, CA
- 2005 MD KISV/ Bakersfield, CA
- 2007 PD KISV/ Bakersfield, CA
- 2009 PD KISV and KKXX/ Bakersfield, CA
1. Think back on your first few airshifts. Could you have imagined being PD of two radio stations?
No way! I didn't even know how to answer the phones right.
2. Do you remember the moment that you began thinking about becoming a PD?
Not really but, I don't think that I'm the only one who has worked nights for more than three years at the same station that feels like.....I'm a little tired of being here until 1 am every night. And all the time that I did spend with Bob Lewis and Picazzo really got me inspired to do more with this life.
3. What is the most significant way your day-to-day duties as PD have changed in the last five years?
With the addition of our Pop station, it's really taking on more calls from the same labels, plus more but now on the Top 40 side. I'm also doing the imaging for KKXX and still all the day to day tasks with KISV. In 2008,my wife and I adopted a new son, JoJo, so I need to make sure everything is done by 5p so I can pick him up from school.
4. With PD duties at Top 40/Rhythmic KISV and Top 40/Mainstream KKXX. How do you balance your time?
Honestly, I find myself getting up like at 4 or 5a most mornings during the weekday. I'm a weird sleeper to where even when I dream, I'm dreaming about work, so might as well wake up and not dream about it, but Do It!
5. Has programming a Top 40/Mainstream affected how you program KISV?
It hasn't really. The way that we have KISV running and has been running for at least the past seven years, we have guys in position to pick up where I may leave off. My APD Randy Richards, my night jock Flawless, Imaging Director James Stuart, all my mixers, and my morning show giant Romeo keep the station on top!
6. Not that a PD has much spare time but what do you do with yours?
Honestly, besides texting Obama on what suits to wear, I try to do as little as possible. I am getting ready to work on getting my pilot's license.
7. How has Bakersfield changed the most since you arrived there?
The houses are cheaper. The population is bigger. And the people still love 2Pac!
8. If you could be on any TV reality show which would you want to be on?
Maybe Jersey Shore so I can fist pump and grow my hair back and I can kill it with gel! Nah...honestly it would be Hell's Kitchen. Gordon Ramsey is the man. He should take Simon's spot on Idol next year!
9. Do you ever look back wistfully at being a jock without the programming responsibilities?
Without question...I think 99.9 % of us started out just wanting to be on the radio, playing music you love and having fun! It is still a blast for me everyday I walk through the door to my office, but to just have that as your only responsibility is Priceless!
10. Let's play "Word Association"...Bob Lewis, your former PD at KISV (now PD at MOViN in Phoenix)?
ONEOFAKIND! You see how I made that one word!
Bonus Questions
If you were to leave Radio and music today and you could choose any other occupation, what would it be?
I would be the one flying you guys to all of your friendly radio and label destinations throughout the United States of America. If not that, I would be in my vineyard, tending to my grapes for my Shiraz vino in Australia! You would all be welcome to visit of course.
