Kathie BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
I've been extremely lucky to have been able to have this dream career in Denver radio! I was part of a comedy troop in college and began my radio career there as well. I got an internship and that evolved into a gig in the promotions dept. I did everything that promotions entails from set-up at events, record promos, do cut ins, drive the van, set up inflatables and I was even the station mascot! For real, it was a Panda Bear with a half shirt on! It definitely kept me humble :) I was a fill in girl whenever the station needed me. I started working with Larry and Kendall back in 2001 and we've been together ever since.
- NAME: Kendall B
- POSITION: 1/3 Of The KS 1075 Morning Show
- STATION: KQKS
- MARKET: Denver, CO
- COMPANY:Lincoln Financial Media
- BORN: Los Angeles, CA
- RAISED: Los Angeles/Inglewood, CA
Kendall BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
I started being a radio guy in my bed room with a tape recorder and microphone. I graduated on to high school announcements. I finally cracked the radio mic at the legendary WJPZ, student run CHR at Syracuse University. Interned with Jay Thomas at Power 106. My first paying job was at KTAA in Kerman, CA for four weeks until the money dried up. My REAL first paying job was overnights at 102 JAMZ - Greensboro NC. Brian Douglas mentored me and I moved up to Morning Show Producer and then Nights. I was in Greensboro for 7 years until I got the call from Cat Collins to come to KS 1075 Denver. I started in middays and then in 2001 I started filling in for the morning show. I never left!
1. How did the show come together?
We all happened to be working here when some personnel changes were being made. Larry was already a part of the show, Kendall was moved up from middays and Kathie...well Kathie...she was in the Kash Kow mascot outfit and got pulled in.
2. What do you remember most about your first day on the air together?
Larry: Reading copy wasn't Kathie's strength.
Kathie: I was horrible. I tried with glasses and without glasses. Headphones and without headphones.
Kendall: I was trying to bring all of my sound effects and beds in like I was some big time morning guy...but I was scared to death. Larry was wondering, why I brought in all of these sound effects and was scared too.
3. Kendall, you made a monster move from Greensboro, NC to Denver. Did it take long to adapt to Denver?
Mainly I had to adapt to running out of breath quickly. Radio wise, it was interesting because I was used to doing a lot of things on my night show and former PD Cat (Collins) wanted me to pull back and do fewer things really well on the midday show. It wasn't tough adapting to a bigger city because Denver is a big city with a medium sized city feel like Greensboro.
4. If you had to compete on a TV reality show together as a team, which show do you think you would do best on?
Larry: Ru Paul's Drag Race...
Kathie: there aren't any teams on that show.
Larry: Um, Amazing Race??
Kendall: Only two of us could go on that.
Kathie: I guess I'm getting left behind...
Larry and Kendall: AGREED
5. If you had to change careers right now and you could choose ANY career field, which would you choose?
Kendall: I would be a teacher probably. Poor but trying to teach America.
Larry: I would be writing for film or television.
Kathie: I want to be a politician...town supervisor
Larry: You want to be a ribbon cutter ?? How about just a local weather man!!!!
6. When your show gets the "you may have crossed the line" speech from Kage or your GM, who is usually the guilty party?
LARRY!!
7. How has PPM affected your show?
Larry: We have been prepping for the PPM for quite sometime and even then our show was doing relevant, funny breaks. So really, we've changed little.
Kendall: With our current PD, John E Kage, we did some minor tweaking to make sure we are getting to the meat of our breaks a lot quicker but not at the expense of the entertainment value. I think we have tightened up our content and it has actually made us even better.
8. What could Denver use more of?
Larry: More of us and bars that stay open past 1:30am
Kathie: More nice houses that are in the under 200K range.
Larry: Assuming she qualifies!!
Kendall: More Black people! I need to see my folks!
9. You've been at KQKS for quite a while. What excites you everyday when you come in to work?
Kendall: The challenge of talking about something new and getting the chance to make someone smile on their way to work or school.
Larry: That every show is going to be different and giving our HEAVY DEEPS (P1'S) the show they want and deserve!
Kathie: I like being able to make people laugh and smile before they head to a job they might not like. People have hard lives and it's nice to be able to help out.
10. If Larry was a character in The Hangover, which would he be?
The tiger in the bathroom!
Bonus Questions
What is breakfast like for the morning show?
Larry: Anything from breakfast bars to take out. Trust me, we ain't missing any meals!!!
Kathie: Thanks for paying, Larry!
Which of you is most likely either run for political office or end up in a nasty tabloid article?
Kendall has a spotless past so he's perfect for politics but Larry is definitely the one who's going to get busted in an airport men's room.
