BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
I started radio in 1997 as an overnight board-op/remote tech for KMMG and KABG. Automation eliminated my position. I then got the opportunity to move down the hall as overnights on KYLZ (Wild 106). I did not have enough experience to take on a fulltime daypart in radio within AGM/Albuquerque. Tom "Jammer" Naylor then gave me the opportunity to move up within the company and move to sister station KWWV (Kiss99.7/Wild106.1) in San Luis Obispo, CA. I held down nights for a little over two years. I then moved back to KYLZ as MD/Nights in 2000. After that I moved to Phoenix and worked on KPTY (103.9 The Party) where I did Afternoons. KPTY flipped formats and then I moved to Reno, NV and was APD/afternoons at KWNZ. Opportunity knocked again where I moved to Las Vegas and held down MD/afternoons for KWID/Las Vegas (while tracking mid-days on Albuquerque's KSYU) for nearly two years. After that, I then moved back to Reno as PD for KWNZ for four years. January of 2008 I moved back to Albuquerque to program KDLW (Wild 977), did that for a year and a half, and then had the awesome opportunity to sign on KAGM as Power 106 in July 2009.
1. What was your last non-Industry job?
I worked as a mail processor for JC Penney
2. Why Radio?
I was at the right place at the right time. My best friend's Brother was in radio. He put in a good word for me and I was blessed to have the opportunity. It also helped having a voice like Barry White at 17.
3. What's the first thing you do when you walk into your office in the morning?
I go through emails, voicemails, Department Head meetings, Music calls, etc (with coffee at hand of course).
4. What animal would best describe you as a person and why?
A Wolverine....I may look harmless, but if you antagonize me...
5. What was the difference between the launch of Power in Albuquerque and the launch of its Rhythmic predecessor WILD?
Wild had a marketing budget, and was a former heritage station in passed years, it was brought back in December of 2007 on a new frequency. With the decline of the economy we marketed Power the "Old Fashioned" way, as most radio groups are at a hardship "financially" these times. We got the word out by hitting the streets, online social networks, shaking hands and being at community events as much as possible. If there is a mass amount of people, you can bet we will be there. My motto was and is "I don't ever want to see that station vehicle parked".....let's get out there!
6. What do you see as the strength of Power in the community?
Power is personable. We are not bigger than our listeners. If your staff's ego is bigger than your audience, you have issues. We put on our pants one leg at a time as do our listeners. My staff is AWESOME when it comes to showing listener appreciation. Just thanking a listener that calls the request line or thanking a listener that shows up at a street hit goes a long way.
7. Who do you consider to be your mentor(s)?
Don Parker, Mark Adams, Tom "Jammer" Naylor, Steve Perun, Chuck Morgan, Scott Seidenstricker, and Tim Gannon.
8. What was the key in KAGM's decision to go with Big Boy's Neighborhood in the morning?
I have been a huge fan of Big Boy from when I lived in California. There has not been a show in this market that has brought such top notch content. This market has lacked that in the rhythmic format. Big gets the job done. If it's the biggest names in the format, you can guarantee they will be on Big Boy's Neighborhood.
9. If you could do your senior prom over again...what would you do differently?
Unfortunately I never had the chance to go. I was grounded often in High School! So I guess it would be stay out of trouble so I don't get grounded.
10. If you were to leave Radio today and you could choose any other occupation, what would it be?
Meteorology or Pharmacy.
Bonus Questions
You are driving across country. Each night in your hotel room you have to watch the same 2 TV shows (different episodes each night). What 2 shows would they be?
Lopez Tonight and South Park.
Albuquerque could use more ________?
Albuquerque could use more radio stations, over 30 total in the market isn't enough..........I'm being facetious.
