BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
My first “role” in the music industry was in high school when I interned for a music venue in Springfield called Boondocks. I learned so much there and it was a great experience. I was AMD at KCLC for a year and that was also a beneficial experience before I became MD.
1. How did you become interested in radio?
I have been interested in radio along with the music industry for as long as I can remember. My parents are huge fans of country radio. For my entire life, my parents have constantly had the radio on. I think that formed my respect and initial interest in radio and just music in general. I remember when I was a teenager, Carrie Underwood came to Springfield (where I am from) and it was the biggest deal ever. I remember hearing it on the radio, seeing it on billboards, and seeing people wearing her shirts. For some reason, that was the moment I knew I wanted to do something with promoting within the music industry. I thought it was crazy how an entire town was talking about one singer for weeks and weeks.
2. Who were/are your mentors?
I think that my biggest mentors are my parents because they have always taught me to work hard and do things with love. They have always supported me in whatever I wanted to do. They just want me to work hard and love what I do. I definitely got my work ethic from both.
3. What is your major at Lindenwood and do see yourself pursuing a radio career after you graduate?
My major at Lindenwood is Business Administration with an emphasis in Management. My career goals are to own an artist management firm or something of those sorts. So, I do not necessarily see myself working in the radio industry directly, but I definitely see myself being in touch with the radio industry to promote different artists. I think anyone who works in the music industry must be involved with the radio industry as well.
4. You stepped into your new role as MD just as the the COVID-19 pandemic was gaining steam. How has that experience been for you?
I honestly felt a little bit anxious about starting a new position in a time that is so strange for all of us. However, I believe that radio is more important right now than ever before because it is one thing that has stayed constant throughout these uncertain times. Radio would not be postponed or taken away due to the pandemic. I think people are really finding comfort in radio now, so I feel like my position has had more of an impact on people which is really cool.
5. For those that have never heard the station, how would you describe the sound of the station?
I would describe KCLC as a melting pot. I think no matter what kind of music you listen to there is something on the station that you will love. I mean, I have heard artists of every genre on the station, which I think is so interesting.
6. How do you feel about the current climate of music?
Like I was saying about how radio is a constant right now, so is music. I think that a lot of artists are using this time to create masterpieces. I think some cool stuff has come out of this time.
7. What new acts are you most excited about?
One new act that I am super excited about is carolesdaugther. Her latest single "Violent" was released late last year and has been blowing up ever since. I am completely obsessed with this track and her style overall. She just released an acoustic version of "Violent" that you HAVE to check out! I cannot wait to hear more from carolesdaugther and am so excited to see which direction she takes next in her career.
8. What is the best advice someone has given you?
The best advice someone has given me was one of my old bosses named Pat. It was my first day working at his venue and I was so nervous. He gave me a grocery list from the band and sent me to the store to get the stuff. I remember telling him, “I’m so nervous. What if I get the wrong thing or can’t find something? They’re going to get so mad at me.” He just looked at me and said, “Just be nice and smile and make it right.” It is the simplest words ever, but they have gotten me so far. I think about that sentence all the time. Whenever I mess something up, I just try and be nice and fix my mistake. I think that is great advice for not only the music industry, but just life in general.
9. What do you view as the most important issue facing radio today?
I think the most important issue radio is facing today is being replaced by streaming services. I do not know many people who get in the car to drive and listen to the radio. A lot of people plug in their phones and play their own music, which results in radio having less listeners.
10. Fill in the blank: I can't make it through the day without …
… matcha green tea. I know it sounds crazy, but I am seriously addicted right now. Matcha green tea is a green tea powder found in Japan and it has so many benefits. I used to be a coffee drinker, but I have completely replaced my coffee with matcha green tea. If you haven’t tried the matcha green tea latte from Starbucks, you need to go get it right now.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time away from work?
When I am not working, I am usually working out or being outdoors. I love to work out and track all my progress. I think it is really a good thing for me to make a promise to myself and then fulfill the promise. I love to be doing anything outside. I like to be active, but I also love to just read or paint outside. I think being outdoors is so healthy for the mind and it allows us to be more creative.
