BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
KOMP/Las Vegas, KAZY/Denver, KYYS/Kansas City, WRZX-WFBQ/Indianapolis, Dave FM/Atlanta
1. How did you become interested in radio?
College. My golf game wasn't good enough to compete at the next level and fraternities didn't interest me, so I turned to radio & TV.
2. You have a long history in Rock radio; how has the transition been for you to the Triple A format?
Engaging the Adult Rock audience is more challenging than most music formats, but regardless of the songs you play, it's the content, presentation and genuine audience connection that matters.
3. The station has been building a base for a handful of years now; where would you say Dave FM is in the pecking order these days in Atlanta?
If pecking order means ratings, we're doing pretty well. We've improved our key metrics and have a strategy in place to continue that growth. We've established a good niche here in Atlanta; we have strong qualitative combined with healthy levels of AWTE.
4. How would you describe the music mix on the station?
Balanced. We pay special attention to texture, artist depth and new music that defines our sound.
5. Tell us about some of the things the station does for the community.
We have an aggressive green position; we activate dozens of events per year including our monthly Dave-FM "workforce," a volunteer initiative with the radio station rewarding our audience with premiums for donating time to local environmental issues.
6. During football season you air the Falcon's games. Do you see this as an opportunity to draw in new listeners to the musical side of the station?
Absolutely. The NFL is one of America's strongest brands and anytime you can tap into that power it's advantageous. In prior years our Falcons presence consisted of the game only; now we have fun with the personality side of the players, management and broadcast team. A recent example is our "Matt FM" day where we had an on-air celebration of Matt Ryan's 30th birthday.
7. Your HD-2 channel, Dave Roots, is a nice complement to the station. How is that service growing for you?
Very well, our numbers are improving each quarter. Margot does a terrific job with Roots.
8. What is the biggest misconception about your station?
That we are a boutique, niche station -- I believe we have some of those attributes, but we strive to be a big player from both a ratings and revenue standpoint.
9. What is your typical day like?
It starts early, Atlanta traffic is well-known for being "challenging" ... so I avoid it and get in about 6:30a. That allows me to listen to the morning show and get a good start on the many things all the PDs reading this know we do each day.
10. What do you view as the most important issue facing radio today?
Engaging content.
Bonus Questions
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time away from work?
I still like to tee it up when I can; our son is starting youth football, so that's fun to be a part of, too. But I really like to smoke and grill. I strongly encourage everyone who likes great food to invest in The Big Green Egg. It's the best smoker in the world! Here's the link --www.biggreenegg.com
