BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:
KAUR/Sioux Falls, SD; KLYX/Sioux Falls; KFML/Denver; KXPK/Denver ... but mostly KBCO
1. How did you become interested in radio?
While majoring in journalism at Augustana College, I was talked into reading the news on our campus radio station, which was heard by about five students at any given time. Deciding news was too serious (duh); I started spinning records instead!
2. Who have been your mentors?
Ken Cook (KLYX) and John Bradley (KBCO)
3. You have been at KBCO a very long time. How has the station evolved over the years?
It is now a no-patchouli zone.
4. In what ways has your job changed over the past few years?
I play a lot more Dave Matthews and Jack Johnson. Oh, and thanks to Google, I no longer have to make things up.
5. How do you stay in tune with your audience?
I try and stay engaged the old-fashioned way: participate in a lot of our events so I can meet our listeners and chat one-on-one; answer the studio line; and respond to e-mails. As for Facebook and Tweeter ... no thanks!
6. What do you like best about working at a Triple A station?
The incredible variety of music! In addition to playing old faves, it is exciting to hear new talents and then introduce them to our listeners.
7. What has been your biggest career highlight?
Interviewing Paul McCartney backstage at Folsom Field in Boulder in 1993.
8. Besides your own, what is your favorite radio format?
Depends on my mood. Sometimes I want blues, '60s, classical, soul, polka. Just about anything except rap, heavy metal and "new" country.
9. What is the best advice you would give to young radio/promotion people?
Have skills and other experience to fall back on if you can't find (or keep) a job in this business because the job pool shrinks every day. There's no shame in asking, "How would you like your eggs?"
10. If you wanted to completely change careers today, what would you do?
Become a lighthouse keeper on the coast of Oregon or Maine.
