Arlo Parks
Hailing from the Hammersmith area of London, Arlo Parks (born Anais Oluwatoyin Estelle Marinho) carries on her roots of Nigerian, Chadian and French ethnicity. Just 20 years old, she is currently studying English literature at the University of California. But she is also quickly making a name for herself in music.
Parks has just released her debut album, Collapsed In Sunbeams. Her music is deeply personal and inspired by her own life’s experiences as well as others’. Her sound has a dreamy melodic base which showcases her sweet and understated vocal style. Standout tracks from the album include “Hurt,” “Too Good,” “Caroline,” “Black Dog” and “For Violet.”
Parks told The Guardian she is very empathetic -- she calls it her superpower. “Sometimes I’m just giving and giving to people who aren’t always deserving. But I’ve learned to listen and approach people without judgment. I’ve had so many conversations with so many different kinds of people – it’s opened my heart, which is useful when I’m writing songs.”
Parks recently did an NPR Music Tiny Desk concert. She has plans for touring the U.K. and Europe later this year.
