Brett Dennen
Apr 25, 2011
Brett Dennen is a singer/songwriter in the truest sense. He comes from the folk tradition and writes songs that have powerful messages. He first developed a strong following in California, where he is based, but the word about this amazing and unique talent has now spread across the country and around the world!
His 2006 effort, "So Much More," proved to be his breakthrough vehicle with several tracks enjoying airplay support at the format, setting him up to be named by Rolling Stone as one of the "10 Artist To Watch in 2008."
He returned in 2008 with "Hope for the Hopeless." Also well-accepted by the Triple A format, the album showed Dennen had honed his ability to write appealing, friendly songs while making sure the message he is conveying remains clear and focused: There is no denying he has a lot to say concerning the state of the world today and he does not hesitate to speak his mind.
Now we have the self-produced "Loverboy." His songs continue to feature catchy melodies and words with clever rhymes, often laid over subtle African pop rhythms. He also continues tackles big subjects like love, death and social injustice, but somehow manages to sound sunny and hopeful the whole way through.
In addition to the first single, "Sydney (I'll Come Running)," several other tracks stand out on the album including "Surprise, Surprise," "Dancing at a Funeral," "Frozen in Slow Motion," "Make You Fall in Live with Me," "Only Rain" and "Little Cosmic Girl."
"In many ways this is my first album," Dennen said of "Loverboy." "On my previous albums I said what I needed to say. I evoked every different mood and sentiment and emotion. Now I don't really have anything to prove. I've been the new kid on the block and now that phase is over. I get to start all over again, relax and refocus."
Dennen is on an extensive tour this spring. In the fall he will be participating in the Rombello Cruise along with Michael Franti & Spearhead, G. Love and Citizen Cope.
