Buddy Holly
Jun 13, 2011

Buddy Holly was tragically killed at the young age of 22 in the famous 1959 plane crash that also took the lives of Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper and inspired the classic Don McLean song 'American Pie.'
But in his short life Holly wrote many songs that are classics today and he stands as an icon of the early rock 'n' roll movement. In fact, Holly was a charter member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986.
Now Fantasy Records is delivering what is probably the most definitive tribute to Holly and his eternal songs ever. "Rave On Buddy Holly: A Tribute" features the likes of Fiona Apple & Jon Brion, My Morning Jacket, The Black Keys, Modest Mouse, Nick Lowe, Florence + The Machine, Cee Lo Green, Paul McCartney, She & Him, Justin Townes Earle, Kid Rock, Lou Reed, Patti Smith, Julian Casablancas and more - 19 songs are included in the package.
These artists cross generations and styles, collectively embracing Holly's distinctive rough and tumble inventiveness. Instead of being a straight cover album, artists were free to explore new interpretations while still maintaining the spirit of the original recordings.
Film-music supervisor Randall Poster, notable for his work with Martin Scorsese, Wes Anderson and Todd Haynes, was hired as producer and overseer, along with Gelya Robb. "As the tracks from various contributors were gathered for the album, we seemed to be gathering pieces of a complex and original puzzle," he said of the process.
Poster also credits various track producers like Matt Sweeney, Joe Henry, Jack White and C.C. Adcock for the record's richness.
Early tracks bubbling to the surface at Triple A include: "Every Day" (Apple & Jon), "Dearest" (The Black Keys), "Not Fade Away" (Florence + The Machine), "(You're So Square) Baby, I Don't Care" (Green), "It's So Easy (McCartney) and "True Love Ways" (My Morning Jacket).
"Rave On Buddy Holly: A Tribute" hits stores on June 28th. Holly would have been 75 this September 7th.
