Jolie Holland
Jun 27, 2011
Jolie Holland grew up in Texas, where from a young age she experimented with writing, playing and singing music. By her teens she had learned piano, guitar and fiddle, and was making music her education as a traveling musician. San Francisco was home for a time in the mid-'90s before relocating to Vancouver and founding the neo-traditionalist folk outfit Be Good Tanyas.
But her restless soul took her back to the Bay Area, where she eventually signed a solo recording deal with Anti. On her fourth studio album, "Pint of Blood," Holland co-produces in partnership with Shahzad Ismaily. Ismaily accompanies her on every song (drums, percussion, bass, synthesizers and guitar), with Grey Gersten and Marc Ribot adding unique guitar tones to many of the tracks.
Of Ismaily, Holland has said, "Having the same musical vocabulary is so important. Shahzad and I had a deep understanding immediately. He not only understood the music completely, but almost psychically too."
As always, her lyrics speak transparent truth and her one-of-a-kind voice makes each song shimmer with emotion. In addition to the first single, "Gold and Yellow," check out "All These Girls," "Tender Mirror," "June," "Little Birds" and "Rex's Blues."
