Dawes
Jul 25, 2011
Dawes is an American rock band from Los Angeles, California, composed of brothers Taylor and Griffin Goldsmith, along with Wylie Gelber and Tay Strathairn. Dawes was formed from the band Simon Dawes after the departure of co-songwriter Blake Mills. The new band formation also led the four to explore an entirely different style of music - one that references to the timeless "Laurel Canyon" sound of the '60s and early '70s in Los Angeles.
In 2009, the band recorded their debut album, "North Hills," in a live setting to analog tape. The Jonathan Wilson-produced project established the band with an earthly, organic and from-the-heart sound. The album led to great press and allowed the Dawes to tour relentlessly for the past couple of years. The song "When My Time Comes" was used on TV and in a Chevy commercial.
Dawes now returns with "Nothing Is Wrong," which still has their "authentic vintage" sound -- as Rolling Stone called it -- although they have progressed a bit with this new batch of songs. In addition to the focus track "My Time in Los Angeles," other stand-out tracks include "My Way Back Home," Fire Away," "Coming Back to Man," "So Well," "Moon in the Water" and "If I Wanted Someone."
"The best rock 'n' roll is never preconceived," said Taylor Goldsmith. "It's almost a country mentality: 'This is what we do. We write songs.' That's how it is for Dawes."
Dawes recently did a special show in L.A. with Jackson Browne and Jonathan Wilson. They performed with Robbie Robertson on the "Late Show with David Letterman" and "The View." They have also been chose by Browne as his backing band. They have performed or will be performing at all the major festivals including Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, Newport Folk, Outside Lands, Sasquatch, Mountain Jam, High Sierra, Winnipeg Folk, Music To Know and others. And they will be taping a "World Cafe" segment in August.
Dawes has just completed some dates in the U.K. and are now back on the road in the States.
