Imelda May
Aug 8, 2011
Imelda Mary Higham, known to us as Imelda May, is an Irish vocalist and musician. She began her career in music at 16 and released her debut album in 2005. She won the Best Female Artist of the Year award at the 2009 Meteor Awards. May has shared the stage with Wanda Jackson, Elton John, Jeff Beck and others.
America is already well acquainted with May through her performances on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," the 2010 Grammy Awards and a PBS Concert Special with Beck. May has also achieved triple-platinum status in her native Ireland and gold status in the U.K.
On her latest effort, "Mayhem," May wrote 13 out of the 14 tracks including the title song. Performing a fusion of many styles, her accomplished band includes husband Darrel Higham (guitars), Al Gare (double-bass), Dave Priseman (trumpet) and Steve Rushton (drums).
In addition to the title track, others songs of note from the album include "Psycho," "All For You," "Inside Out," "Proud and Humble," "I'm Alive" and her great take on "Tainted Love."
The Los Angeles Times recently wrote: "Dublin, Ireland-born Imelda May's career is fostered by paying homage to legends like Buddy Holly and Johnny Cash and, more importantly, furthering rockabilly's cross-pollination into New Orleans jazz, delta blues and amp-splitting punk aggression."
"Mayhem" recently debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard New Artist s chart. She kicked off the launch of her album with another performance on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno "in July and was just seen on "The Conan Show" on August 8th. She also just appeared at this year's Lollapoolaza.
Her current tour ends August 12th. Look for her to return to the States for more dates later this year.
