Ryan Adams
Oct 24, 2011
Since we were first introduced to Ryan Adams via his band Whiskeytown, it has been quite clear that this man is one of the best songwriters alive today. Furthermore, since he has been out on his own as a solo artist, he has demonstrated that he has a wealth of musical ideas just dying to come out.
But as is often the case with an artist that is as prolific as Adams, it's hard to get him to stand still for very long. He's rocked, he's revisited his Americana roots, he's musically indulged himself and he's written some of the most succinct songs ever penned. One simply wonders which side to his creative personality we'll meet when he prepares to release a new album.
After a two year recording hiatus, Ryan Adams returns rested, clean, married, relaxed and refocused -- and with what just might be his most personal and enjoyable album of his long and prolific career. He worked with Glyn Johns on Ashes & Fire and is helped out by such luminaries as Norah Jones and Benmont Tench.
In addition to "Lucky Now," which is heading toward the top of the Triple A airplay charts, several other tracks deserve your attention, including the title track, "Dirty Rain," "Chains Of Love," "Invisible Riverside" and "Kindness," which features Jones and wife Mandy Moore on backing vocals.
"I feel like I could do anything now. I'm mentally free and physically well, and I love what I do. I'm not the guy I was. If I was, I couldn't be alive," said Adams.
Ashes & Fire was an NPR Music First Listen album preview and on October 10th he appeared on "Conan." More TV appearances are in the works.
