Chris Isaak
Nov 21, 2011
It is amazing to realize that Chris Isaak has been making his own special brand of music since the release of his debut, "Silvertone," way back in 1985. Since then he has recorded many more albums and been nominated twice for a Grammy. During that time he has enjoyed tremendous success on many radio formats, acted in a variety of movies and TV shows, and even had his own musical comedy series called "The Chris Isaak Show," which ran from 2001-2004 on Showtime. But no matter his state of creative expression, the Triple A format has always been ready to welcome him back with open arms.
Now Isaak returns with a project that for most of us seems like a no-brainer. Called Beyond The Sun, the project pays homage to Sam Phillips and the iconic artists that sprang out of Sun Studios in Memphis. Since he fell in love with his parents' 45s as a child, Isaak has been obsessed with the glory days of Memphis' Sun Studio and the visionary artists who got their starts there-including Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison, Carl Perkins and Jerry Lee Lewis-all of them discovered and nurtured by Phillips.
In addition to the originally penned "Live It Up," Isaak and his band revisit such classics as "Ring Of Fire," "I Forgot To Remember To Forget," "Miss Pearl," "Can't Help Falling In Love" and "Dixie Fried."
"When we were doing the record, I kept learning things," said Isaak. "For instance, nothing on those early records has a rock beat-it's all shuffle and stripper beat. I wrote "Live It Up" to put a rock beat on the record, so that that beat too is represented."
Isaak recently performed on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" and "Tavis Smilely." He had an in-depth piece on NPR and Beyond The Sun has gotten other great press. He is currently touring:
