The Civil Wars
Aug 11, 2013

The Civil Wars - California-born Joy Williams and Alabamian John Paul White - ended up seeing tremendous success from their debut album Barton Hollow: they won two Grammys and the album is now certified RIAA Gold in the U.S.
Further, their music was used in all kinds of syncs; they were invited to perform at a number impressive gatherings and shows; they worked on side a project with T Bone Burnett; they toured with Adele and Emmylou Harris, among others; and even collaborated with Taylor Swift.
But in spite of all that success and attention, creative differences has placed a wedge between the two artists and they are currently on an extended hiatus!
Fortunately for us, they had pretty much finished up their self-titled sophomore effort before you-know-what hit the fan. Produced by Charlie Peacock, the disc again displays the passion and musical simpatico that gives The Civil Wars such appeal.
Although decidedly acoustic based, the new album offers up some interesting arrangements and instrumentation. In addition to "The One That Got Away," other powerful songs on the album include "I Had A Girl," "Same Old Same Old," "Dust To Dust," "Eavesdrop" and "Disarm."
In a recent New York Times interview, Williams said, ""I have a lot of ambition. I believe in pushing borders and finding new territory and expanding. I personally felt like John Paul was more of the ilk that things would happen organically and 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it.' "
The music video for the song, "The One That Got Away (Studio Cut)," has been added at both VH1 and CMT. In addition to the music video, a special behind-scenes-video of the duo is available to view at NPR Music, while a video featuring the album track "Same Old Same Old" recently premiered at VH1 and CMT.
There are obviously no plans for a tour at this time - here's hoping they can reconcile their differences and get back to making amazing music together again soon!
