Polica
Nov 10, 2013
Minneapolis-St. Paul has always been known as a hotbed for the independent music scene, and many bands have broken through to national success. One of the latest bands to emerge is called Polica.
The band rose from the ashes of a popular duo called Roma di Luna - one half of that duo was Channy Leaneagh (vocals). She was joined by Chris Bierden (bassist), Drew Christopherson (percussion) and Ben Ivascu (percussion), with Ryan Olson on synths, programming and some production.
Give You the Ghost, Polica's debut full-length CD, was well received in the U.S. and abroad, leading to much anticipation for the new album Shulamith -- named in tribute to seminal Canadian feminist Shulamith Firestone, who passed away last year.
The new album continues with their bass-and-drum driven sound balanced by keyboards. And the ethereal vocals of Leaneagh (the processed effects on her voice somehow work to a distinct advantage) complete the band's mesmerizing sound. It's everything you hoped their second album would be.
In addition to the new single, "Chain My Name," several tracks on the Shulamith are worth your attention including "Smug," "Warrior Lord, "Torre," "Trippin," "Spilling Lines" and "Tiff."
"The last thing I want to do is be making a record that's not sincerely coming from me," said Leaneagh in a recent Elle interview. "In general, we try to just ignore the idea that people are going to buy this record. The world is very fickle, and I don't know what it likes or what it will latch onto. But if you can be happy with what you make and people like it, it's beautiful."
