Billy Joe & Norah
Dec 9, 2013

When Don and Phil Everly released Songs Our Daddy Taught Us back in 1958, the tunes on that album were already considered traditional. Now over 50 years later these songs take on the added dimension of the Everly Brothers legacy attached to them with the release of Foreverly by Billy Joe Armstrong and Norah Jones.
Like the two brothers, the project boasts incredible harmony vocals - this time male/female instead of male/male. The approach to the material is straight-forward and bare-bones leaving plenty of room for the vocals and the lyrics to resonate. Some guitar there, some piano there and a basic bass-drum rhythm section gives the project a timeless vibe.
The entire album is a lovely listen - but some of the songs really standout including "Long Time Gone," "So Many Years," "Silver Haired Daddy Of Mine," "Rockin' Alone (In An Old Rockin' Chair)" and "I'm Here To Get My Baby Out Of Jail."
"I got into the Everly Brothers' record a couple years ago and I thought it was just beautiful," Armstrong recently said in Stereogum interview. "I was listening to it every morning for a while off and on. I thought it would be cool to remake the record because I thought it was sort of an obscure thing and more people should know about it."
What might have seemed an unlikely pairing, Foreverly has proven to be surprisingly successful musical meeting of the minds.
