Spoon
Aug 17, 2014
It is hard to believe that Spoon have been around for twenty years but it is true. In that time they've released seven albums and a number of EPs, but it seems they have hit a new creative level with their latest effort, They Want My Soul.
The band went on an unplanned hiatus after the release and subsequent support for 2010's Transference - with each bandmember going off to do other projects and/or assume production duties. But Britt Daniel, Jim Eno, Eric Harvey and Rob Pope eventually drifted back towards each another -- this time with a fifth member in tow, keyboardist Alex Fischel.
The result is a fresh and energetic take on what is certainly the distinctive Spoon sound! Several tracks on They Want My Soul are keepers including the first single, "Do You," "Rent I Pay," "Inside Out," "Rainy Taxi," "Outlier" and "Let Me Be Mine."
In a recent NPR interview Daniel said, "Between 2001 and 2010, we put out five records, which is not a lot by '60s standards. But in terms of today's standards, it's pretty fast. So we just needed a break. And when we got back together, I felt that that break was a good thing. We were all excited about playing again."
Spoon recently appeared on "Jimmy Kimmel Live." Spoon's eighth - and by all accounts best - studio album They Want My Soul entered the U.S. album chart at #4. They are currently on tour culminating with appearances at the Austin City Limits Music Festival in October.
