Peter Wolf
May 24, 2010
When you think of Peter Wolf, rockin' blues with The J. Geils Band comes to mind first. But as his new solo effort, "Midnight Souvenirs," once again reveals, there is a whole 'nother side to Mr. Wolf! Believe it or not, this is his seventh solo outing and after the critical success of his past album, 2002's "Sleepless" (Rolling Stone Magazine named it one of the '500 greatest albums of all-time"), it is a logical progression for the season singer-songwriter and certainly his most accessible for Triple A in quite some time.
Featuring duets with country legend Merle Haggard, the dynamic Shelby Lynne and the majestic-voiced Neko Case, "Midnight Souvenirs" integrates and embraces rock, R & B, blues, folk and country in a way that has distinguished Wolf's career. Like "Sleepless," this new album was co-produced by Wolf and Kenny White. Further, the majority of the new songs were co-written with Oscar winner Will Jennings, with whom Wolf has worked before.
Several tracks on "Midnight Souvenirs" - many of which address matters of the heart and how we process those feelings when we are alone late at night - are perfect for Triple A including "Tragedy," "I Don't Wanna Know," "Watch Her Move," "Lying Low," "The Green Fields of Summer" and his tribute to Willy DeVille, "The Night Comes Down."
"I never obsess about the commercial aspect of my music, just like with my artwork," said Wolf, also an accomplished painter. "What matters is if the painting is interesting to keep or show to somebody. It's the same with the songs; you hope people will make an emotional connection. I absorb the influences and reshape them. The act of creation is what gives meaning to my life and keeps me going -- in music and in art."
In 2009, Wolf reunited with The J. Geils Band for some selected dates. In April of this year, Wolf performed on "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon." He is also actively touring as a solo artist this year. His remaining May dates include the following.
