10 Questions with ... Skip Cheatham

BRIEF CAREER SYNOPSIS:

Been in the media business in one form or another since the age of 12.

1. Why did you decide to go into radio?

I’ve always been interested in media and music. My father, who is a minister, started a production company to use non-traditional means to deliver the “message.” I started working at the company at the age of 14. I learned how to operate broadcast cameras and sound equipment. My father gave me two turntables and a Radio Shack Realistic mixer and things took off from there.

2. How are things these days?

I have the pleasure of working with one of the most brilliant comedians of all time, DL Hughley. I lay out every aspect of his show, from show formatting, directing, writing, producing bits, mixes, imaging and more. Working as PD of KZMJ is just a matter of taking a good station and trying to help it become great. It’s the little details that make the difference. I work with the talent and already great promotions and sales departments. Together, we’re really integrating with the community more and more.

3. Do you have any advice for up-and-coming air personalities and program directors?

Know your audience and your market. Do not fall into the trap of ‘this is how we’ve always done it’. Dare to be different.

4. What Inspires You?

Besides my family, I love communicating with people. I love it when something done on the air, touches people in a personal way.

5. Who were some of the air personalities you grew up listening to?

Joe “Butterball” Tamburro, Jerry Wells, JoJo Davis, Carter & Sanborn, Frankie Crocker, Mr. Magic, Lady B, Tom Joyner

6. What are you most proud of?

By far, my family, starting with beautiful wife, who puts up with me. Our two teenage children, who are standout student athletes. And my oldest daughter, who is a doctor (PhD).

7. Would you share those who have your influenced and or mentored you?

My father comes in at #1. After that, there are so many people who have influenced me. Some might not even know that I’ve drawn from them. I’ll try to name a few…LA radio legend, Don Mac, RIP-Vernon Floyd (former owner of WJMG), Ken Dowe, Hymen Childs, David Kantor, Greg Street, Mike Kelly, Tom Joyner and a host of others.

8. Any predictions on the future of radio and radio syndication?

Some people say radio is a dying media. I disagree. It has definitely shrunk due to internet, streaming and all other digital platforms but as we learn how to adapt and incorporate our digital with our terrestrial products, I feel there will always be a place for radio to thrive.

10. What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?

Learning everything so you’re prepared to do anything! And don’t be afraid to fail. (Which is odd because I hate to fail)

Would you share one of your funnier radio moments?

Are you kidding? I work with an Original King Of Comedy! We have the funniest moments every day! (Most of which will never make it to the airwaves.)
