1. Why radio?
I was always interested in music even as a kid and listening to the radio was like “The Thing” I would act like the personalities I heard and then do my own version after I cut the radio off! I loved the way the radio made me feel. I felt like the music and personalities were talking directly to me!
2. How do you see your future?
Being a station owner as well as overseeing multiple stations. Going back to my college (Langston University) to teach and give them the real about what to expect after graduation in the media field. Creating more content for my streaming channel (Media Room 360).
3. Do you think terrestrial radio is still relevant?
Radio will always be here…We Aint Going No Where! If it’s done right, local programming will always cut through. Other streaming devices can’t do that. Staying on top of what matters to your audience “Locally Is Key.” Evolving, yes radio has to keep their social media game tight. Before, you could hide behind a mic and do your job-- NO MORE. People are searching to see what you look like and where you are going to be as well as they latest gossip with your spin on it. Social media used to follow radio, now it’s just the opposite. It’s imperative for radio to evolve and super serve with their social media platforms. Plus, it’s a great revenue opportunity. How many new stars were created during the pandemic? During the internet ERA? What if your favorite station had one or two personalities like that? You’ve got to talk the lingo to the audience that you are serving. And by the way, the AC formats have people who love social media just as much.
4. Is there a moment you still look back at and laugh at?
Doing a live concert on the air during a live club broadcast in Dallas with the Youngbloodz when they had the number one song in the country in 03. I was sweating bullets because I was hoping and praying that they didn’t cuss. They did a whole set like 28 minutes --It was an ICONIC moment.
5. Who did you grow up listening to?
Doug Banks , Tom Joyner, Bonnie Deshaun, Shannon Dell, Jean Sparrow, Crazy Howard Mcgee, Pink House, Ramonski Luv, Irene Moheeka, and Joe Soto.
6. What are you most proud of?
Being able to be a Father to my Kids, a Husband to my wife, being recognized for my work ethic, Mentoring Youth and having the opportunity to give back to the next generation of Radio….
7. Who have been some of your influencers and mentors?
Earl Boston, John Candelaria, Tammy Honesty, Colby Colb, Jay Stevens, Guy Black, Rickey Smiley, Cathy Hughes, Janet Curl, and Williard Pitts.
8. What lies ahead for Urban Mainstream/R&B radio?
Turning a Radio station’s Social Media experience to new Loyal listeners for your station. It can happen.
9. Fill in the blank: I can't make it through the day without _______?
Watching CNN and checking on the world. As journalists we are always making sure we are up on the latest
10. What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?
Be yourself, don’t take anything personal, business is business, understand that there will be some highs and Lows. People come and people go. Learn as much as you can to take your career to the next level. Most important, you haven’t made it until you have been fired.
