1) What was your first job in radio? Early influences?
My first job in radio was starting out at Root Communications (now Quantum Communications), being the intern at the age 11. At the age of 15, the GM gave me my first part time job as board op, and I worked my way up to overnights on WDAR- FM (Sunny 105.5). Early influences? I would say it would have to be Ollie Williams. I used to listen, and I still do. I always wanted to meet her and I went up to the station for a day and I got to see her work and I know that I would like to have the same job as her. Another influences would have to be my good friend Fisher. He has a good personality and I have learned so much from him. He acts the same on and off the air and he doesn't have a big head.
2) What led you to a career in radio? Was there a defining moment, which made you realize "this is it"?
What led me to a career in radio was going out to all the stations remotes talking with the jocks and helping them with whatever they needed help with.
3) If you were just starting out in radio, knowing now, what you didn't then, would you still do it?
YES I WOULD! I LOVE RADIO AND TALKING ABOUT THE BUSINESS!
4) Where do you see yourself and the industry five years from now?
In the next five years from now I would like to see myself on MTV and doing a syndicated radio show.
5) What's your take on radio in Florence currently? Is it as good as six months ago, better, or about the same? Elaborate.
I would say it is better now.
6) What was the transition you had to make in your new position?
When I first came to Cumulus of Florence, I was a Board Op and went to Webmaster, then Interim Promotions Director, now On Air & Asst. Promotions Director
7) Of all the skills you have gained through the years, is there an area you like to improve?
I would like to improve on being a little more "hip hop" on our station. My PD Gerald McSwain tells me I need to work on that while reminding that me I am not a CHR jock (which I do miss).
8) How are the new technologies and new media affecting the urban audience?
I really don't think it is affecting the urban audience. Most urban fans get the music for free by listening to radio stations.
9) How does it feel to be the youngest DJ in the market?
It feels good to be the youngest. I am very blessed to have my job at this age at 17 instead of being some intern that get bossed around the cluster.
10) What advice could you give to someone that has lost his or her job in radio?
I would say don't give up. When I lost my first gig in radio, I did not know what to do, and I thought I'd never get a another job in radio. My mentor Fisher coached me and told me that it happens all the time, and two days later I get a call from Cumulus/Florence Operations Manager Matt Scurry. He told me that he did not have any on air jobs at the time, but he had a board op opening so I took that job and worked my way up. Thanks for giving me a chance to work with you guys here at Cumulus of Florence, Matt!
Bonus Questions
What's been your biggest disappointment in radio today?
I would say I'm getting tired of hearing about the budget. Come on, all stations say ''We don't have money in our budget'' or something about the budget.
What is your biggest challenge working at this station?
I think there is a big challenge working at WYNN by being yourself while not saying the wrong thing on air so we can still keep our station number 1 in the market.
What's the best piece of advice anyone's ever given you?
The best advice someone ever gave me was that you have to watch your own back and never trust everyone who you work with, because they can stab you the back and they will have your job. I do believe that because I have seen that in other markets.
Describe your favorite meal?
Cheeseburgers and french fries.
What "reality show" could you see yourself appearing on and why?
MTV Real World.
