1) What was your first job in radio? Early influences?
WZMB 91.3 East Carolina University. Early influences included Nate Quick, Kendall B, Skip Murphy, Bushman, Apollo, Andre Carson, Jerry Smokin B, Minnesotta Fattz and Phillip March
2) What led you to a career in radio? Was there a defining moment, which made you realize "this is it"?
My neighbor, who is now a mixer for me at WIBB, was GM of the college radio station at East Carolina University. My defining moment was when I was a part-timer at WPEG in Charlotte, and Nate Quick got sick and Andre Carson called me in to do afternoon drive after only being there two weeks. After that shift, I was officially an announcer.
3) If you were just starting out in radio, knowing now, what you didn't then, would you still do it?
Of course. Once it is in your blood, it's hard not to do it.
4) Where do you see the industry five years from now? How do you feel about satellite and Internet radio?
I think radio will come back around to making the local element important again. Internet radio is cool, but in most markets people want to hear about their area.
.
5) What's your take on radio currently? Is it as good as six months ago, better, or about the same? Elaborate.
I believe radio is somewhat healthy. The only thing I do not like is that jocks aren't getting trained or paying dues like they used to. People are getting thrown into positions without any knowledge or training.
6) What is the one truth that has held constant throughout your career?
Change is inevitable.
7) What was the transition you had to make in your new position?
Well it is definelty a different situation. I went from trying to knock off the heritage station, to now being the PD of it and trying to knock down what I did across the street.
8) Of all the skills you have gained through the years, is there an area you'd like to improve?
anagement. I learn something new everyday. Especially being with Clear Channel, they are very organized and structured.
9) How well do you think today's urban broadcasters really understand Arbitron?
Fairly well, but there needs to be more training available
10) As you look back over your career ... any regrets? Missed opportunities?
I was a little too eager when I was younger to move up fast, and I made some quick decisions instead of thinking about them.
