1) Introduce us to the band members.
Glenn: Guitar, Organizational leader of the band. He maps out everything from our tours to our set lists. He's captain on top of things, keeping the ball rolling at all times.
Wendy: Bassist, BGVs, Financial organizer of the band. We call her the Big Money Honey. She's got a head for numbers and can add large numbers in her head. None of the rest of us can.
Justin: Guitar, BGVs, tech savvy guru of the band. He left a job as a website designer to tour, and now he's in charge of video blogs and Twitter and all things technically profound, including personal questions about the day-to-day workings of our Apple computers and smart phones.
Adam: Drummer, big heart award recipient. He helps provide insight to the guys who write to our band and is also excellent at all extreme sports. He inspired Justin to take up his previous skill of skateboarding, leading Justin to a fall that fractured his wrist, with which he unknowingly recorded most of our new record and played on fall tour before finding out it was actually broken.
Dawn: Singer, band head of public relations. I am the direct liaison to the female fans for the band online. I tend to be the (s)mothering type, so I'm the one chasing everyone on tour down trying to put a band-aid on their boo-boos and waving a stalk of broccoli around going on about vitamins and nutrition.
2) Is there a message to the songs on NOW? Do you craft an album so that the songs work toward a singular point/theme?
NOW is a call to action, a movement to break free from the headlock that our past hurts have on our present. It's time for us all to start doing what it takes to defeat what entangles us and begin to impact our world with the power of God. We started this album with a focus that evolved as we wrote it. In the end it took on a power of its own.
3) What's the story behind your CHR/Rock single "Stay Close"?
At times in my life, I have felt completely overwhelmed by my circumstances and questioned how God could ever let things get so bad. But in time I began to see how I had become a slave to the fears in my head, and now they were shaping my reality instead of letting God be in control. At that point I realized that God was the only solid ground left for me to stand on, and my very life depended on drawing near to him.
4) Do you have a favorite song on the new album?
My favorite song is called "Escape." It's an allegory about how fear can steal our lives from us just as if who we really are has been kidnapped. To me it has an incredible drive and feel to it.
5) Other than a t-shirt or a CD, what do you hope a fan takes with them from a Fireflight show?
I hope they leave with a burning feeling in their spirit that the power of God can help them to change their lives as they know it and to change the lives of others in their community and all over the world. Also, I hope they leave with the promise of a new future for a needy child that they have decided to sponsor.
6) Do you have any inspiring or humorous stories from recent radio visits?
Every once in a while I stumble upon the recording that Wally made us make, changing the words of our song "Unbreakable" into a break-up song supposedly from one of his college girlfriends entitled "Undateable." I'm pretty sure those are the meanest words I have ever been recorded singing, and I feel so awful hearing them. Yet, I can't stop laughing. Wally, you're a crazy dude!
7) Where is your favorite place to play?
We love to play in Germany. It's incredible to be so far away from home and see people who don't speak English as their first language, singing every word of your songs. It's a humbling experience.
8) Are there any spring tour plans? Where can we see you play?
We will be finishing up our "Stay Close Tour" with Rapture Ruckus, Cory Lamb, and Devin Williams. We look forward to starting up another festival season and playing all over the U.S. Check out our tour listings on our website.
9) What song do you wish you had written?
"My Heart Will Go On" by Celine Dion. Just kidding. Personally, I would say "With or Without You" by U2. It's a powerful song, I think it is an incredibly three-dimensional musical snapshot of the human experience.
10) Do you have much time to check out other artists' music? What are you listening to right now?
A lot of times I just look for quiet when we've been playing out a lot, but right now I really love the newest Coldplay, Gotye, Imogen Heap, and I've just started checking out Among Savages.
