1. Brief History/Synopsis
Born and raised in the west texas town of Midland...one of six dunn kids all from the same mom and dad. Was homeschooled, along with all my siblings, until high school by my "super mom" then finished at a Classical Academy where I wrote papers and debated for my grades.
Went to college to play basketball and ended up with an engineering degree (that I've yet to use). Spent a year in Africa doing missions and micro financing.
Currently call Nashville, TN home.
2. What does a normal day at home look like for you?
A "Normal" day is a day where nothing is "normal" :) I tend to wake up from 9-10am drink a ton of coffee, eat a bunch of raw oats and some Word, go chat with one of my 5 roommates, then do some "work". "Work" is anything from writing songs, recording, networking, or taking care of computer related busy work. Then I'll go lift weights in the afternoon for a few hours and hang with friends or write songs in the evening/night.
3. What's the song that you just can't get out of your head right now?
"Mercy" by Phil Wickham. The most impressively crafted CCM song I think I've ever heard. Beautifully poetic, insightful and emotion lyric with a melody that kills me.
4. How much do you travel, what are the challenges? How do you juggle life on the road with wanting to be home?
I'm on the road about 100 days a year. But I'm a single dude, so it's not putting too much of a strain on my regular life. It is difficult to develop a solid foundation or be super involved in my church family, but I'm sure most people with busy lives would say the same.
5. What artist or pastor has had the greatest impact on you, and why?
Pastor: Matt Chandler. Amazing communicator. Changed my perspective multiple times
Artist: David Ramirez. Most honest, vulnerable song writer on the planet. Bares his soul in ever line. The good, the bad, and the ugly.
6. What's the last book you read?
I'm a huge audio book nerd....so I read a book about every two weeks. The most recent being "freakonomics". In summery, It's a book about asking good honest questions pertaining to life and refusing to force reality to fit within the confines of what we wish was true. It challenged me to see truth and actual reality instead of trying to see what I WISH was true (which is normally what we do).
7. Tell me how & when you became a believer. What caused you to want to serve God in full time ministry?
I became a believer in my bunk bed with my dad when I was 8.
"Full time ministry" is something I believe I'd be doing if I was an engineer, teacher, musician...... I think we're all called to be full time advocates for THE LIFE. And being the best janitor you can is a form of "full time ministry" and just as valuable as writing and singing "Christian songs". I chose to do music because it's easier for me to immediately see the fruits of my labor. There is a clear line between writing from a Christ centered worldview and hearing about lives that have been effected. And I get SO excited to SEE my creations doing work for The Kingdom.
8. Give us a quick take on your new project, "Crystal Clear".
I write about things I'm struggling with and learning in my own life. So the majority of the songs on "Crystal Clear" are addressing this question: Why does God let bad things happen to good people? For the most part the answer I purpose is, "I don't know...but what I do know is that His love is CRYSTAL CLEAR and He has our best interests in mind."
9. What organization/service group are you affiliated with
I've just become a partner/ board member for Melody of Hope, an organization that puts on charity entertainment events and fund raising strategies to fund and support a myriad of non profit organizations. It is a perpetual engine to FUND, which is the major need for most ministries. I love being a part of something that does the grunt work, and the foundational support people often forget is necessary to feed the orphan and take care of the widow.
10. Person you'd most like to have a discussion with, living or dead.....Deities are excused from this question
George Washington or Bono...two of the most selfless idealist to walk the modern world....and really just wanted to see them listed in the same sentence ??
Bonus Questions
1. Favorite Bible Verse....life verse?
Deuteronomy 30:19 - sums up what I think is the main theme throughout the Bible. "Choose life - that you might live".
2. Funniest or most embarrassing moment on the road?
Off the top of my head..... Forgot my guitar at a one off show once...turns out playing a show without an instrument is pretty difficult.
3. What artist or pastor has had the greatest impact on you, and why?
Pastor: Matt Chandler. Amazing communicator. Changed my perspective multiple times
Artist: David Ramirez. Most honest, vulnerable song writer on the planet. Bares his soul in ever line. The good, the bad, and the ugly.
