CUMULUS Classic Rock WGRF (97 ROCK) and Active Rock WEDG (103.3 THE EDGE)/BUFFALO have pulled out of the bidding for a contract to continue to carry BUFFALO BILLS play-by-play, the station announced MONDAY (1/2).
The BUFFALO NEWS reports that CUMULUS VP/GM CHET OSADCHEY said that the stations "walked away" from negotiations for an extension when talks got to a point, the paper reported, "where they felt it was no longer in their best interest." The stations have carried the BILLS for 13 seasons and remain interested in carrying the games but "ultimately, it's just the highest bidder," OSADCHEY said.
In addition, in the adjacent ROCHESTER market, the DEMOCRAT AND CHRONICLE is reporting that CLEAR CHANNEL Talk WHAM-A has announced that it will also be dropping BILLS broadcasts, which will be moving to the crosstown ENTERCOM cluster on either Sports WROC-A (SPORTSRADIO 950 ESPN) or Classic Rock WCMF, or both, for next season, a possible indication that the BILLS' rights in BUFFALO are headed to ENTERCOM, which owns Sports WGR-A, Talk WBEN-A-WLKK-F, and Talk WWKB-A in the BUFFALO market as well as Urban Oldies WWWS-A, Hot AC WTSS (STAR 102.5), and Top 40 WKSE (KISS 98.5).
