Participation in the JACOBS MEDIA TECHSURVEY 8 – an all-industry radio survey that will measure how radio listeners use technology -- is building fast!
In past years, the JACOBS TECHSURVEYS have been limited to stations in the Rock format family. This year, in partnership with ALL ACCESS, JACOBS has expanded the study to include all stations in all formats in order to create a true industry technology survey.
Already, more than 130 stations are signed up – in the biggest and smallest markets, representing a wide range of formats. The goal is to recruit at least 100 more stations for the survey that will field later this month.
The results will be presented at the WORLDWIDE RADIO SUMMIT at the W HOTEL in HOLLYWOOD on APRIL 27th, and ALL ACCESS is excited to be sponsoring this event.
Here is a Q&A with FRED JACOBS that will give you information about why your station should participate.
Q. So far, so good. With 130+ stations participating, why the need to make it bigger?
A. We want to create format profiles, so we’re looking for at least 5-10 stations per format. In this way, stations that participate can compare their results to the overall sample, as well as other stations in their format.
Q. What are some of the key topics that will be covered in Techsurvey8?
A. After 7 years of these studies, we have a long list of topic areas relating to technology. This year’s survey will include PANDORA, FACEBOOK and TWITTER, smartphones, in-car entertainment systems, tablets, streaming, and a wide range of activities that attract radio listeners. We’ll have a special focus on apps, and the motivations behind why people “like” a station’s FACEBOOK page.
Q. What does it cost?
A. Any station can participate for free by just allowing us access to their database. However, if stations would like to see and analyze their local data there’s a small fee, ranging from $300-$500 depending on market size. And they receive their own Media Usage Pyramid.
Q. A Media Usage Pyramid?
A. Yes, it’s a graphic representation of what your audience is doing in media - besides listening to the radio. The pyramid below from last year’s survey gives you an idea of how much data our surveys generate.
It shows, for example, that 97% of the sample owns a cell phone, 77% are on FACEBOOK, and 22% listen to PANDORA weekly or more. The percentages on the far right indicate the change from the previous year’s study. Stations that participate on a fee basis will receive their own individual pyramid that represents their audience, thus providing them with strategic planning data that most broadcasters talk about but don’t have.
Q. What obligations do stations have besides agreeing to participate?
A. We take care of everything – email copy to send to your database and a custom link that we use to analyze the data. We take care of all the details – the analysis and data delivery.
Q. When will the results be presented?
A. A free webinar will take place this spring for all stakeholder stations and their staffs. Each station’s data will be delivered afterwards.
Q. So why participate?
A. It’s a great opportunity to take part in the biggest research study ever conducted for radio, and the chance to truly gain a strong understanding of how your audience uses technology. We’re excited about our partnership with ALL ACCESS and the chance to do something really special for radio.
