A FORT MYERS man who operated a pirate radio station avoided spending time in jail for it, getting a sentence of community service instead. NBC affiliate WBBH-TV/FORT MYERS reports that AL KNIGHTEN, who ran DUNBAR COMMUNITY RADIO along with RON JENKINS from his home before being shut down in an FCC raid in DECEMBER, faced jail time under FLORIDA law but was given the lighter sentence in a plea bargain.
"I felt like I was going to go to jail for doing something right in the community," said KNIGHTEN, who told the TV station that he and JENKINS plan to revive the station but will apply for an FCC license this time, adding, "It's going to be done the right way this time because it is definitely needed and we have more support now."
