Strike Continues At MBC/Saint John, NB Cluster

Replacement workers and personalities from outside the market are on the air as the CANADIAN MEDIA GUILD strikes against MARITIME BROADCASTING SYSTEM Oldies CFBC-A, Top 40 CIOK (K100), and Adult Hits CJYC (98.9 BIG JOHN FM)/SAINT JOHN, NB.
Staffers at the station have been on strike since MONDAY morning.
The issues include a demand for higher wages -- BIG JOHN FM morning man GARY STACKHOUSE told CANADIAN PRESS that many staffers earn just above NEW BRUNSWICK's C$10/hour minimum wage, and the union is seeking a raise for morning announcers to C$12/hour as a base, going up to C$17.21 -- while the station responded with a message on its website declaring "THIS IS NOT TORONTO" and calling a 23.2% wage increase over three years "not realistic or sustainable." MBS says it offered a 9% raise over four years.
