Canadian Private Radio Revenues Up Again In 2011

STATISTICS CANADA's annual survey of the private radio broadcasting sector, this one covering 2011, showed operating revenues up 3.7% from the previous year to C$1.6 billion, an improvement from 2011's 3.2% increase and 2009's 5.2% decrease. The 2011 revenues returned the industry to 2008 levels. Profit margin also increased from 19.1% to 19.4%, but did not reach 2008's level of 21.1%.
FM stations saw a 4.3% revenue increase to C$1.3 billion, while AM, with more stations moving operations to the FM band (16 since 2009), grew 1.1% to C$311 million.
ONTARIO stations showed the most profit, with SASKATCHEWAN at the bottom; the MARITIMES and QUEBEC saw profitability decreases, but every region's profit margin exceeded 10%. Ethnic stations showed the highest growth in operating revenues, at 5.3%, with English-language stations up 3.7% and French-language stations up 3.2%.
