LOCAL MEDIA SAN DIEGO Alternative XTRA-F (91X) will reach a milestone TOMORROW, reaching 30 years broadcasting in SAN DIEGO and the CALIFORNIA/MEXICO border region. 91X launched on JANUARY 11th, 1983, with "Sex (I'm A...)" by BERLIN, bringing "Rock Of The '80s" to SAN DIEGO and a radical playlist of songs mostly unfamiliar at the time. The station quickly become known for being a true "alternative" to traditional Rock radio music and lifestyle, gaining fans and establishing a heritage that has carried three decades.
91X kicked off the anniversary celebration in last month with "91X 30 'TILL 30," a retrospective highlighting 91X music and culture over the years. Starting with 1983 and counting up year by year every day to 2013, 91X would highlight songs released that year, and at 91x.com post a "digital museum" with audio, photos and memories collected by past and current 91X staff. Check it out here.
On SATURDAY, JANUARY 12th, 91X will host the "91X 30th BIRTHDAY BASH" concert event at HOUSE OF BLUES SAN DIEGO, sponsored by COORS BANQUET. The concert features SAN DIEGO bands SLIGHTLY STOOPID, P.O.D., BUCK-O-NINE, THE RUGBURNS, VOKAB KOMPANY and a special appearance by SPRUNG MONKEY. No birthday party would be complete without a cake, so local company PUBCAKES is making a custom 91X Birthday cake that will be unveiled and shared that night.
Tickets for the 91X 30TH BIRTHDAY BASH are not for sale, 91X has been giving them all away to listeners through a variety of channels. Thousands of listeners have entered the contests to win tickets, including the "91X LOYAL LISTENER" program, which encourages listeners to submit stories and photos of classic memorabilia to receive tickets.
“I am almost the same age as the station, so this anniversary has given me as well as the rest of SAN DIEGO a chance to remember how special and unique 91X truly is,” said 91X PD CHRISTY TAYLOR. “It’s been great meeting former DJs and seeing the passion of fans that can still remember where they were the day 91X launched. I’m so excited to be here for this landmark which respects the stations 30 year heritage as we continue to move forward. Happy Birthday and Viva 91X!"
