Condolences to family and friends of longtime sportscaster SHELBY WHITFIELD, who died TUESDAY (2/5) in JACKSON, NJ at 77.
The TEXAS native started his radio career while serving in the Army as Sports Director of the ARMED FORCES NETWORK RADIO EUROPE. He called WASHINGTON SENATORS baseball on WWDC-A/WASHINGTON from 1968-70, later writing a book about the NATS' move to TEXAS, "Kiss It Goodbye."
WHITFIELD served as Sports Director at AP RADIO in WASHINGTON in the 1970s and Sports Director and Executive Producer at ABC RADIO in NEW YORK in 1980-98, writing a book with HOWARD COSELL, "What's Wrong With Sports?" He also worked as a consultant for sports broadcasting.
