EMMIS COMMUNICATIONS Chairman/Pres./CEO JEFF SMULYAN expanded on his push to get FM chips activated in this week's exclusive ALL ACCESS Power Player Interview. In the interview, JEFF acknowledged the challenge in getting both radio and the carriers on board.
"Most smartphones already have FM chips in them," he said. "So our job is to convince carriers that activating the FM chips made sense not only for our listeners, but for them. We talked to everyone, not only other carriers, but we talked to members of Congress, the FCC and Homeland Security. It became a labor of love for us because we believe this can be a game-changer -- and we, as an industry, need a game-changer."
So our job is to convince carriers that activating the FM chips made sense not only for our listeners, but for them.
After sending out a letter to radio stations to encourage their participation and outline the timetable for launch (NET NEWS, 2/21), followed by a free webinar to prepare them for SPRINT's FM chip-activated world (NET NEWS 2/28), SMULYAN was encouraged by the early response from radio. "The response from the industry about getting involved has been remarkable," he exclaimed. "It's truly gratifying when not one broadcaster has turned me down."
