NEXT MEDIA Alternative WKZQ (96.1 'KZQ FM)/MYRTLE BEACH, SC adds ESPN RADIO'S MIKE & MIKE SHOW in mornings effective TODAY. MIKE & MIKE replace the syndicated FREE BEER & HOT WINGS SHOW, followed by their regular format of new rock and classic alternative music the remainder of the day.
In addition, sister Talk WRNN-A splits from its simulcast with WRNN-F "HOT TALK 99.5" to become Sports as "ESPN RADIO 1450" with the MIKE & MIKE SHOW in the morning and the rest of the ESPN RADIO NETWORK programming. MIKE & MIKE previously aired crosstown at CUMULUS Sports WSEA.
NEXT MEDIA/MYRTLE BEACH, SC Market Manager JOHN SHEFTIC said, "We are thrilled to bring ESPN RADIO back to MYRTLE BEACH. ESPN has always delivered a top-notch product when it comes to sports programming and we are pleased that we can include this format as part of the NEXT MEDIA RADIO GROUP."
WKZQ PD BJ KINARD told ALL ACCESS, "First and foremost, if you like Alternative music in MYRTLE BEACH, you listen to KZQ. We already have those listeners. Our morning show had been under performing the radio station for a good while. They talked a lot of sports already, were 100% male oriented and didn’t have any music during the show. MIKE & MIKE give us the chance to try and keep some of our previous morning show listeners and capture MIKE & MIKE’s audience that’s been hoping for their return to the market."
He added, "This should translate into better numbers in the morning and potentially more listeners throughout the day because of those that may be finding us for the first time because of MIKE & MIKE’S national profile. We are hitting our music positioning hard during the morning show too to reinforce what the station does the rest of the day."
