The WALL STREET JOURNAL is reporting that PAUL FINEBAUM is joining ESPN on AUGUST 1st, with a radio show to be focused on Southeastern U.S. affiliates and a TV simulcast on the new, ESPN-owned SEC NETWORK starting when that channel launches in AUGUST 2014. He will also continue appearing on ESPN television shows, with 100 televised appearances scheduled annually.
FINEBAUM, long based at CUMULUS Sports WJOX/BIRMINGHAM (and before that at CLEAR CHANNEL Talk WERC-A), where he also wrote a newspaper column for the old BIRMINGHAM POST-HERALD and columns for SPORTS ILLUSTRATED, and has been serving as a commentator for FOX affiliate WBRC-TV (FOX 6). The host was embroiled in a legal dispute with CUMULUS and predecessor CITADEL over his contract, and has been sitting out a noncompete provision of his contract after the end of his WJOX deal. For the new job, which comes with a five-year contract, FINEBAUM will relocate to CHARLOTTE. The radio show will reportedly be distributed separately from the main ESPN RADIO feed.
'"It would be the understatement of my life to say I was thrilled," FINEBAUM said. "It is incredibly exciting to be part of a new adventure, particularly one that involves the premier brand in sports along with the pre-eminent conference in sports."
