Condolences to the family and friends of EUGENE radio personality BARRY CORKERY, known as "BEAR" on the air. CORKERY passed away in his sleep on MAY 23rd, at age 68.
ANDY HARRISON, aka "Captain Organic," who also began in radio at KFMY with CORKERY, and was a long time friend, shares with ALL ACCESS, "BEAR was a fixture in the EUGENE radio market, for three decades. His career began in his KANSAS area homeland in the late 60s, before he relocated to the WEST COAST. In the BAY AREA, BEAR was a DJ at popular rock station KSJO/SAN JOSE. BEAR first appeared on the EUGENE airwaves in 1974, at KFMY on the ridge top of BLANTON HEIGHTS. After a brief return to the BAY AREA for three years in the late 70s at the world famous KOME/SAN JOSE, BEAR returned to EUGENE and worked at KZEL, where he was on air daily until 1984. The rest of the 80s found BEAR working at a mixture of short lived radio stations in EUGENE including KZAM, KRXX-A, KLCX, and a brief TV gig at KLSR."
Current KRVM PD KEN MARTIN has fond memories of BEAR, who he also started in radio with at KFMY. "BEAR is one of the greatest inspirations in my radio life and in my career in general. I wouldn’t be the kind of person I am today without BEAR’s influence. The kids he mentored were so appreciative of his knowledge of the radio business."
IRIS HARRISON, current and longtime DJ at KGON/PORTLAND, also started with BEAR at KFMY in the mid-70s. "BEAR was like family to me. He mentored me from the time he taught me radio at KLCC, and then throughout my radio career. I can’t believe he’s gone."
CORKERY is survived by his wife DOROTHY, their son ADAM, his daughters KIM and JENNY, and his grandson, LIAM. A memorial tribute to BEAR will be held at the Vet’s Club on SATURDAY night, JUNE 22nd.
