The idea came up during a visit to the studios by NORTH CHARLESTON Mayor KEITH SUMMEY, a frequent guest on WEZL. LAST NIGHT (6/11), with the support of the Mayor, the City Planning Commission voted unanimously to change the name of COLISEUM DRIVE near the NORTH CHARLESTON COLISEUM to DARIUS RUCKER BOULEVARD. RUCKER was born in CHARLESTON, and he and is family live in the CHARLESTON area.
WEZL's RIC RUSH, who attended the meeting, had the privilege of calling RUCKER to inform him of the honor. DARIUS expressed his gratitude saying, "I'd never thought I'd have a street named after me. That's one of the coolest things that has ever happened to me. I'm really excited about it."
Later this SUMMER, the city will host a ceremony to officially change the name to DARIUS RUCKER BOULEVARD. That ceremony will be hosted by TJ PHILLIPS and RIC RUSH, and will be broadcast live on WEZL.
