Report: WAPI-F Plans Flip To ESPN Radio
July 24, 2013 at 3:49 PM (PT)
CUMULUS MEDIA Talk WAPI-F/BIRMINGHAM will flip to Sports and rebrand as ESPN RADIO 100.5 FM, according to a report at the BIRMINGHAM NEWS' AL.COM. The station, if it flips, would be CUMULUS' second FM sports talker in the market, joining WJOX, and both WJOX and WAPI-F would carry former WJOX host PAUL FINEBAUM's new ESPN syndicated show based in CHARLOTTE, according to the report.
ESPN RADIO previously aired on crosstown COX MEDIA GROUP Sports WZNN (97.3 THE ZONE) and Sports WENN-A-W297BF (107.3 THE TICKET), both of which flipped to new formats after being taken over by new owner SUMMITMEDIA. AL.COM reports that the flip of WAPI-F to ESPN RADIO was due to CUMULUS having to find a station to air the network in order to get FINEBAUM's show; it cites logos popping up on printed college football posters and on Facebook as indicating the flip.
The article does not indicate what will become of WAPI's simulcast on WAPI-A (1070 AM) or whether the present Talk lineup, with local shows hosted by MATT MURPHY and RICHARD DIXON and CUMULUS syndicated shows with MARK LEVIN, MIKE HUCKABEE, and MICHAEL SAVAGE, will continue on AM, but a tweet from MURPHY this afternoon says, "WAPI Radio happy to continue on IHeart radio, www.100WAPI.com, and of course on 1070 AM."
