SALEM RADIO NETWORK is fighting back against MEDIA MATTERS FOR AMERICA, the liberal media criticism organization, for calling SALEM's JANET MEFFERD Show "notoriously homophobic." VP/News and Talk Programming TOM TRADUP called MEDIA MATTERS' post about MEFFERD's interview FRIDAY (10/18) with an author who claims MATTHEW SHEPARD's 1998 murder was not a "hate crime" but instead a drug deal gone bad "distorted and nauseating." MEFFERD interviewed STEPHEN JIMENEZ, author of "The Book of Matt: Hidden Truths about the Murder of MATTHEW SHEPARD," positing that the notorious murder in LARAMIE, WY was not about SHEPARD being gay.
TRADUP responded, "While controversy and talk radio go together like soup and sandwiches-and strong opinions are nothing we at SRN ever shy away from -- it is particularly disturbing that a mainstream, faith-based Christian radio program like The JANET MEFFERD Show is subjected to such distorted and nauseating MEDIA MATTERS characterizations as 'notoriously homophobic' and calling JANET's program a 'platform for fringe anti-gay activists.'
"The JANET MEFFERD Show is a daily marketplace of ideas and opinions, based on the premise that Americans have the right to hear-and be heard on-the issues of the day. Smear merchants like MEDIA MATTERS -- who habitually and dishonestly take excerpts of mainstream talk radio shows and post them online in a thinly-veiled attempt to distort what was actually broadcast-are the true fringe activists, and they deserve both our pity and our prayers."
