Condolences to family and friends of longtime MEMPHIS radio personality "CAPTAIN" CURTIS LEE BRAXTON, who died WEDNESDAY; while no age or cause of death were announced, longtime colleague CLEAR CHANNEL Urban AC WDIA talk show host BEV JOHNSON told ALL ACCESS that BRAXTON was close to 70 years old.
BRAXTON, known as CAPTAIN CURTIS LEE on the air, first worked with JOHNSON at WLOK in 1981. They had another 12-year association at WDIA, until he was part of CLEAR CHANNEL layoffs earlier this decade. Among his other MEMPHIS stops was at Urban AC KRNB (MAGIC 101, now Urban AC KJMS (V101)).
"[I'm] shocked," JOHNSON said of BRAXTON's passing. "He was a great person, and [had] a great radio voice." JOHNSON said BRAXTON was working at CUMULUS Urban Oldies WRBO (SOUL CLASSICS 103.5) prior to his death. FOX affiliate WHBQ-TV reports BRAXTON was ill for the last two months.
"He loved his job," JOHNSON said. "He loved being a disc jockey."
